Colorado - 10 point advice

I'm a Colorado resident with 10 PP. I'd hope to draw 201 someday - but at the current pace, it will take another 16 years! Unit 2 is about 10 years away. I'm 46, so maybe I can still hold out. I've taken 4 bulls, all between 4x5 & 6x6, so I'd like to do better, but also need to be realistic.

I'm looking at other options:
1) Unit 61 muzzle. I should be able to draw with 10 pts.
2) Unit 1 early. I should be able to draw with 8 or 9 pts, so I may even be able to "bank" a point this year. Has anyone heard anything about this unit?
3) RFW tag - maybe Three Forks. I've driven by this ranch and seen it on TV. It looks great, but even their info page says not to expect big bulls.

What would you do?

I have heard that unit 1 is pretty difficult to access. By looking at the map, you can see that the unit is very small and rugged. Getting an elk out before it spoiled looks challenging. Possibly access this unit from Utah??? You might take advantage of this years points banking and have two quality hunts back to back.

I'd apply for Montana. Huge bulls, no wait. While hunting there, take a point here.

Keep in mind with the "pilots" there are 5 extra public tags in both unit 1 and 10 this year.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-19-06 AT 03:59PM (MST)[p]Grasshopper,

What are the "pilots" that you mention?

Also, I did apply in MT last week. If I get lucky and draw any suggestions on areas to consider? This is my first time applying w/ MT.

Thanx!

Paul,

Have you considered Mesa Mood on th Pinyon Mesa?

They will guide you for free I believe. This would be my choice.

If I were a resident with 10 points, I would definitly wait another year or two before bailing out, to see what the new 80:20 split and point banking do. Now, as a nonresident with only 10 points, 10, 2 and 201 definitly are an eternity away. I am seriously considering bailing with the point banking option this year.

Thanks for all the thoughts. Keep 'em coming.

KTC- Pinyon Mesa East is even tougher. If everyone stays in the cue, at 3 tags per year, I'm 20 years away. Do you know anything about Pinyon Mesa West? That would be about 6 years away.

Does anyone else know anything about Unit 1 - either access or quality of hunting? My maps show a jeep road crossing the Green River, but don't know if it's a bridge or a low water crossing.

Paul S,

I don't think you would be happy with the quality of the bulls on Three Forks. There are lots of them but not a whole lot of real big ones and it sounds like you have already harvested some of those. good luck on your decisions.
