What is meant by the 5 point minimum on unit 34 for NM elk? I thought NM didn't operate using a point structure.

NO WHAT THERE SAYING IS POINT RESTICTION FOR ANTLERS , APRE MUST HAVE LEAST 5 POINTS ON ONE SIDE. IVE BEEN WAITING FOR 34 FOR 4 YRS. GOOD LUCK I HEARD YOU SAY YOU WOULD SETTLE FOR A COW HUNT THAT SHOULDNT BE TO BAD .

oh, that's makes sense - I didn't even look at it that way. I guess I will put in for a cow license as my second choice. I'm still debating on that, because if drawn, the week of the cow hunt is usally close to the week of the whitetail rut where I hunt here in Texas. I'm still giving that one some thought. Thanks for the response.

That cow hunt in 34 is harder to draw than alot of bull tags in the state! Good luck...odds look good from last year because they upped the tags to 600 for each hunt. About 2500 applicants for the December hunt alone.

I disagree, 34 will stay the same to draw (for NR) lots of guys want to be able to take a raghorn or cow so they will avoid 34, I personally know a group that will not apply for APRE hunts, also one guy in my group is not happy about it, I insisted and he reluctantly agreed.

I have taken 3 elk so it is ok with me, but before I had taken one I might have avoided an APRE hunt so I knew I could take anything near the end of the hunt.

I think a few NR will avoid the hunt, a few will go for it since it will help with bigger bulls, but many of them will have been applying there any way.

I like the restrictions, NR odds increased very slightly when they went into affect, not anough to even know for sure.

I have applied, and failed to draw, 34 6 times (5 times for bow) sooner or later I will draw.

Good luck unless you are applying for the same hunts as me!
