O.k.......just thinking about one of these guns in a Sendero Fluted.

How does each one kick in regards to 300 Win Mag and 300 WBY Mag's both shooting 180 grains? These guns do not bother me to bad.

Really looking at the 7MM RUM ( I am 5'8" and 160 lbs ). No jokes!!!

about like the 300win...I have a sendero in 7mm and the weight of the sendero really takes alot of the kick out of it.

The muzzel blast is the worst part with either of them. The senderos are barrel heavy but if you have been looking at them you know this. They make great long range shooting irons.

You might wanna take a look at the Savage Weather Warrior. It's also fluted, but has a muzzlebrake that can be turned on or off.
I have one in 300RUM and with the brake on the recoil is pretty mild. It groups real well and won't cripple you on the bench!!
Good luck with your decision!! :D

Was about to buy the sendero, until I went to pick it up. The heft and weight made me understand that I didn't want to carry it up and down the steep country I often hunt Elk In. Also, it seemed balanced for Bi-pod shooting, not free hand elk stalking and I find myself in thick country often. Helluva a long gun open country rig though...

Good Luck,
Roadtrip

Elkslayer, I have a Remington BDL Stainless Synthetic rifle in .300 RUM. With scope and 4 rounds of ammo, I figure it weighs just under 9 pounds. Using a high quality sling, it is easy to cart around the mountains. Mine does not have a brake. When shooting at the bench, I use a Past shoulder recoil pad. Toting around a Sendero would be tough. mtmuley

Thanks everyone. So here is where I am at....so far:

Looked at the sendero and agree that it is not for me. To heavy and I do not like the grip.

Looking at a 300 Win or 300 WBY in a WBY Ultralight ( will shoot 150 grain bullets in these guns )

Or, a Remington SPS or XCR in 7MM RUM shooting 140 or 150 grain.

Want to use this new gun for mule deer hunting and being able to shoot a long distance if needed.

The 300 Win and 300 WBY are with-in 2" at 500 yards with Hornaday factory 150 Interbonds.

Well, what do you all think now?

I am really leaning towards the 300 Win in the Ultralight ( 5 3/4 lbs ) with a 24" barrel.

A pretty good choice. Have you looked at the Browning or Remington Titanium rifles? I believe the Browning is chambered in .300 WSM. Might be worth a look. mtmuley

Alan,

I am finding my .300 Winchester is a pain. I think they are great, but hard to reload for with the short action. Something to consider if you ever think of reloading. My gun does not like factory ammo much.

Please do not buy a ultramag. How dead do you want your deer?

.308 calibers have tons of options in bullets, but if it is a deer gun only what about the 7mm or .25 calibers? I think you can buy a lighter gun with great range without buying a belted magnum.

How hard does it kick? Don't ask that on here!;-)

KTC,

Does you gun like the factory 300 Win loads? I do not reload and probably will not in the future. The wife says that I already have to many hobbies.

I already hqave a Winchester Classic 7MM Rem Mag that will probably end up being my deer gun. Presently shooting 162 grain Hornady BTSP and they did great on elk, but I want it flatter shooting. Will probably go to a 140 grain factory Federal or Winchester Accubond. Hornady also loads a 139 grain Interbond that I will try out.

The ballistics on that 300 RUM are out of sight! Would love to shoot it in a 150 grain factory load with a muzzle break and a SIMS pad. Sight right on at 300 yards and only be 21" low at 500 yards. The 7MM would be 27" low at 500 yards with the 140 grains.

I have a new B & C stock coming for the 7MM in green with black speckle. If I end up liking the stock, then I will probably stick with it.

KTC.....try a box of the 180 grain Barnes Triple Shock in your gun. I bet it will group well. Both elk and deer that I have shot with my 300 WSM have had great penetration and decent exit holes. Don't worry about the copper bullets....I like them.

This past fall I bought a weatherby mk V ultralightweight in a .300 weatherby. I took it out and shot it and it nearly broke my nose! I decided after one shot that i was going to put a muzzlebrake on it. I sent it into scheels gunshop and John and Randy did a great job on the accubrake and the trigger lightening! The accubrake matches the countour of the barrle perfectly and what a difference did it make. It hardly kicks at all! It is unbelievable. YOu may hear a lot about guys who are worried abuot increase noise and muzzle blast but in all truth it is not bad at all! I put a zeiss conquest 4.5-14 x 44mm scope on talley's one piece aircraft aluminum rings and I love it! Took it out west and it was very pleasant to carry around for a full week. I shot my 10 pointer in a blizzard with 40 mph winds at 280 yards and it performed flawlessly. i am shooting 180 grain accubonds with H4831 in it and it consistently shoots 1" groups...this was in the summer heat, with a lightweight barrel and I was getting about 3350 fps at the muzzle... Great ballistics as well. Thats my set up and I love it. My uncle has a sendero in a 7mm stw and a 7mm RUM....he hates lugging it around but they are tackdrivers. His stw will put 15 shots in a quarter size group! Good luck with what you decide, let me know if you have any questions!

Elkslayer!!!

MY 90LB SON SHOOTS A 300WSM WITHOUT A MUZZLEBREAK!!!

WE PUT A LIMBSAVER PAD ON IT BUT THATS ALL!!!

HE SHOOTS 180 GRAIN SLUGS & HANDLES IT FINE!!!

IT'S A HARD HITTING GUN!!!

TOLD THE BOY IF HE'S HUNTING ELK HE'S GONNA USE A GUN BIG ENOUGH FOR ELK!!!

THE ONLY bobcat THINKING THE 300 RUM MIGHT BOOT A LITTLE,JUST COWBOY-UP A LITTLE!!!

bobcat, Good for your son! Although a big kick ass magnum isn't necessary, shooting what you can handle is the key. If your boy handles the WSM, he is armed for whatever he feels like hunting. Maybe a bear too? mtmuley
