I was just wondering what everyones advice or experiances with these calibers? I'm considering buying a new gun in one of these calibers to hunt deer and elk. Any helpful suggestions or coments would be great. Thanks.

Work to hunt!! Live to hunt!! And the rest spent keeping the wife happy!!

The .300 RUM will without a doubt give you higher velocities and foot pounds of energy just purley based on case capacity when using the same bullets.

IE. from federal ballistic charts using 180 Barnes TSX bullets

300 WSM muzzle 2980 fps VS. 300 RUM muzzle 3150 fps +170 fps
300 WSM muzzle foot lbs 3549 VS.300RUM 3965 foot lbs +416 lbs

I own a 300WSM and a couple of 300 WM's but no RUM. I have been using the 300 WSM a lot and really like it.

I happen to subscribe to a shorter action being stiffer and a short powder column burning it's powder more efficiently. Does that make it better? That is just what I like.

I am a big believer in shooting what you like and are comfortable shooting with whatever that may be. When you are talking 30 caliber magnum class rifle as a generalization you are splitting hairs because they all will do the job.

When it comes down to it it is your comfort level and confidence that will make the difference. Just my .02

Good luck and if you can't decide buy both....

I choose to shoot the 300WSM because of lighter weight rifles available. I try to eliminate every ounce of weight possible from rifle, pack, etc. The 300WSM is plenty adequate for mule deer.
Sorry I have no pesonal experience with the 300RUM.

My dad has a mod 70 featherweight in 300 wsm and it is a real tack driver. Almost touches bullets at 100 yards. I don't know about the 300 RUM as far as accuracy goes. I know it is alot faster like the 300 Weatherby.

The Rem will give you 300 fps and a bigger bruise, basically. So if you need the 300, get it. If not, get the WSM.

Go with the 300wsm, lighter gun selection and alot less kick. It has plenty of juice for elk and deer. 300 rum is over kill.

I own a .300 RUM. It is a great gun and shoots great. It is a great caliber and will put the animals down. I watched a 6pt. bull drop in it's tracks at 300 yards, a 450+ lb bear, a deer and 2 antelope get killed this year with this caliber. It is perfect for all of them. Definitely not too much.

Just right said big papa bear.

The .300 WSM is potent elk medicene. So is the .300 RUM. The difference being recoil and rifle weight(and length). All are generally less with the shortmag. In my opinion, the slight increase in velocity is not worth the stouter increase in recoil. Bullet selection is grand for all 30's. So, it comes down to personal choice. Go out and shoot both and it'll help you decide. My preference is the WSM but my huntin' buddy shoots the RUM. We banter back and forth all the time but we both kill bulls. He does complain about recoil during a range session but never mentions it when in the field. FYI, we're both over 55.

If you reload, I would go with the Ultra Mag if not I would use the .300 WSM. In factory ammo the .300 short mag is hard to beat and reloads will not have much if at all over it. With the Ultra Mag and reloads one can bump it up a bit and it can hang with the 30-378 WBY. I have the .300 Ultra Mag and a standard 26" tube. I shoot only reloads/handloads out of it, and I can shoot circles around factory ammo. My 180 grain accubonds are moving at 3420-3440 feet per second. Compared to 3250 f/s for factory ammo. My brother in law shoots the .300 WSM and I have chronographed several factory 180 grain loads and bullets from different brands using his rifle. The speeds ranged between 2970 up to 3015 depending upon which brand of ammo was used. I have not reloaded for him yet but from studying and learning about this cartridge I know that the factory can only be beat by a few feet per second at best. I will say again if I didn't reload I would choose the .300 WSM over the .300 RUM or the regular .300 winchester mag. Why because the speeds are not that much difference between the two. Like already mentioned above its only about 250 to 300 f/s difference, now with handloads the ultra mag is a whole different ball game. I can add another 100 to 150 per seond or so, that means overall its 400 to 450 f/s faster with a bit less bullet drop. I own a F-1 Chrony and to get a accurate speed I will shoot at least 6 shots through the crony and average them. Both produce excellent accuracy and both will take down elk with no problems. Hope this helps.

Ultramags are for guys with little.....

Kind of like the jacked up truck and Corvette. They have their place if you are vertically challenged, but if you want a good gun get a WSM.;-)

If the .300 ultra mag is "only" a few hundred FPS faster, why get the .300 WSM? its only a few hundred FPS faster than a 30/06... Why not get a 30/06? Get the .300 Ultra. I load 180 Barnes triple shock @ 3420FPS and it rocks everything it touches.

No complaints with my 300 RUM. Only took a couple years to tame the tiger. The recoil is about the same as my 30-06. I had a brake put on it that looks like they ported the barrel. I also added a nice recoil pad and changed a few other things. After going through about 40 - 50 load combinations, I'm able to get a 1/2" group out of a 180 grain Accubond that chrony's in at 3480 fps. It's probably the last large caliber rifle I'll ever own.

ktc, Only guys with a big... Well, only non vertically challenged guys should attempt using a RUM. I'm over jacked up trucks, but I'd throw the Ultra in a Corvette and drive off happy! Seriously, the .300 Ultra is a great cartridge if one needs an affordable long range rifle. Whatever your anatomy. mtmuley

I got a new scope for Christmas & finally bought a gun to put it on yesterday. I went with the Tikka T3 lite .300WSM. The olady sez "Why do you need another gun?" heh heh. You all know the answer to that one. The scope is a Leupold VX-II 3x9. I can't wait to go shoot it.

ktc, I don't know if you are joking or not, but both calibers are excellent elk killers. If you are not joking and you just don't like the . 300 RUM, why don't you try to come up with constructive criticism instead of some BS answer. I don't own the .300 WSM just yet but I will someday so I am not responding to try and bag on it. I am both a gun and archery nut and love to reload and build my own arrows. I for one love that hunters have many many choices with both guns and bows. If money was no object I would own one of each of everything. Each and every cartridge has its pros and cons and most have thier own niche that appeals with certian type of hunters for what ever game they are pursuing. To bag on someone because their niche is different than yours is childish IMO. I am responding because its answers like yours be it a joke or not, that turn a lot of people away from these posts and hunting sites like this. I haven't been on MM for awhile now because of good post getting hijacked and turned into crap. Instead of learning and enjoying each others knowledge and expreience, it gets lost in the mud that is thrown around.
