Looking to help my brother out with a load for his new M70 7mm Mag. He is looking for one load for both elk and mule deer. I was thinking about the 150 TSX or the 160 Accubond. What works for you or do you have any recommendations?

I use the 160 gram bullet. Nosler partition for me, but any of the newer generation bullets for bigger game should do fine.

If I were just hunting elk, I use the 175 grain. If just deer, then I use the 150 grain, but the 160 does nicely for both

venor, ergo sum (I hunt, therefore I am)

I think I would first try the 160 grain Barnes TSX. The 150 would work but I'd feel better with just a little more weight behind it.

my 16 year son Ky shoots my old custom 7mm. He has taken 1bull elk and 6 bucks with the rifle. All have been shot with 150 gr. comb tech ball silvertip bt bullets. They are also moly coated. Powder-65g-imr4831. WE tried 2 pwd. types and 10 diff pwd. charges. OH he also shot a bear at 300yds. all hunts were 1 shot kills. I shoot the same type bullet out of my300wm-168gr. Lots of Luck.

I have hunted with a 7 Mag for 32 years. And I hunt a lot. I hand load and hunt everything from rabbits to bison with it. My advice don't use anything heavier then a 150 for Deer and smaller game. Unless it has a thin jacket or a silver tip type. The problem is it is zipping out there so quickly and it pokes right through with out expanding. How ever the 120's and 140's do fine on deer. Believe me I have shot plenty. Now the 160s and 175's do fine on elk bear bison. Most big game of the lower 48 can't absorb what a 7 will kick out. Even in the lighter bullets. I did say most. Moose are pansies but big and so is the bison. Done both. 175 maxed out for bison. And keep shooting!!

Gator,

One of these days we will have to hook up at the A.V. gun range.

Thanks for the info guys, keep it coming!

LAST EDITED ON Apr-03-06 AT 10:05PM (MST)[p]For his "do all" load, how about the 150 TSX then? Seems like the whole TSX line are known penetrators.

I am not sure about the tsx. But penetration has never been problem with any load. Not that i know of anyway. But how is the expansion?

Federal Premium 160 gr. Nosler Partitioner bullet.

I have used this same bullet for a long time when I rifle hunt, any and all species.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-04-06 AT 07:00AM (MST)[p]My tried and true "elk load" is the 160 gr. Nosler Partition over a max (in my rifle) charge of IMR 4831. When seated to be just off the lands of my model 700 I get 3-shot groups of 1/2". My chrony shows this combination to yield an average of 3009 fps. This load is flat shooting and has worked real well for several bulls, a few bucks and one large feral boar.

Its cost a little money and time but I would shoot a 3 shot group through a clean cold barrell from several different brands/weights and types of bullets to find which round shoots the best. If you hit an elk or a deer in the right spot I think any 7mm magnum round would do the job so the choice should be which one shoots best out of your gun. My gun LOVES federal premium 160gr nosler partitions and they do great on deer and elk but I'd shoot 150 gr power points if I got better accuracy out of them.

M1 This summer I will be out there on Sundays(6A:M) morning a lot. Just shoot me a e-mail

I've shot two bulls with the 7mag.
The first with 140 grain speer boat tails.
Needed 4 shots to put him down.
The second, I poleaxed with factory 150 grain Winchester psp.
Every scenario is different though.
