Colorado Archery in August.

What is everyones opinion on hunting opening week for elk in Colorado? I don't believe the bulls will be very vocal. I am unable to hunt anytime between the 9th of september and the 17th. The next week will be for muzzleloading. I'd like to limit the ammount of people I see. So I plan on hunting opening day (aug 26) through the 5th of September. Has anyone had any luck hunting the end of august? I'm worried about getting an animal packed out before it spoils, I haven't had any luck finding a pack animal, yes I have contacted Sombrero but I will be hunting too far south. Any Ideas in that regard would be appreciated.

I'm sure elk are quite killable during the first week of season. They may just not be as vocal...
What area are you hunting in? I may know someone that could pack an animal out for you.

The first week is great. You get first crack at them and the Elk are doing their normal thing and aren't spooky yet. When we are blessed to get one early.....we skin it out and put it in cheesecloth and pour pepper all over it, to keep the flies off. We then get it off the mountain ASAP and get it on ice. We've killed "Wapiti" in 80 degree weather and saved all of the meat by doing this. Did I mention, I hate bees! Those things torment me everytime I get a elk down in hot weather.

Outdoorsnow,

I've always had my best luck in the first week of Colorado Archery. Getting an elk out in time can be a trick, be sure to get the hide off quick and hang it in the shade.

A treestand over a pre rut wallow can be a real killer location.

What unit in Colorado will you be hunting in?

You mentioned Sombrero...unit 20? I know they pack in a few other parts of the state besides the Estes park area... If you hunt high it may be a few degrees cooler during the day and a lot cooleer at night which can help.Jeff
