I have an uncle who know has 9 points for elk in Utah after another unsuccessful draw this year. Can somebody give me some advice for him and what he maybe doing wrong to not get drawn? I know his outfitter is telling him what unit or area to put in for but he is getting really frustrated. He wants a good bull but doesn't really need a 400"er. Any advice would be great? He reallys wants to go next year. He is willing to pay for info or get a new outfitter as well.

All I can say is to be patient. It only took me 13 years to draw. I definately feel his pain.

You have to look at the odds and hope they remain the same. In 2005 there were only 4 early rifle (rut) hunts which could have been drawn by a nonresident with 9 points: La Sals, Diamond Mtn, Three corners, and Wasatch. The Wasatch produces the best animals of those 4 units, followed by the La Sals and the the other 2. There were almost 300 nonresidents with more points (time waiting) than your uncle. He needs to sit back and relax or select a less favorable hunt (based on the current draw odds of course) such as a late hunt.

Every outfitter is trying to get all the people he can to put in for units, hoping one will draw. My advice is to look over the current odds, put in for a unit, then find the guide after you draw the permit. I'd bet Moss would guide on Diamond Mtn, for the right price.

9 points and you are complaining????? if he had 13 I could understand but nine????

Did you send me a PM or just email me. I haven't gotten a PM from you. You can just email me if you like.

Thanks,
Erik

How big a bull will he be happy with - and what is he willing to hunt with bow/ml/rifle?

Be careful as the people on the board will chop you up if your sites are too high without doing some research.

I saw today on the Utah Hunting website that the odds of him drawing unit 355 are 1 in 155, but it doesn't say how many points it took to draw for that one individual who did. I think 10 years ago he wasn't expecting to be in the draw for this many years and now that he is 67 years old he just wants to hunt and get it over with.

He told me today he would be ecstatic with a 350 bull. He does have to us a rifle as he doesn't bow hunt at all. He really doesn't have access to all this info online like we have, hes sorta old school. His outfitter he has been talking to tells him to keep holding on but I think he wants to do it this coming year, and if it takes a lesser area then he will be fine with it. He would like an outfitter.

If anybody can help us out and let us no a good hunt that only takes 9 points we would really appreciate it.

Torch I never got the PM you sent me.
You can call me or email me.

Thanks, Erik Beckett

Erik,

I can give you some pointers on how to make the draw odds real, however the homework is up to you. If it's not worth your effort - stick with your outfitter, it's partly what your paying him for..

9 years for a NR Utah rifle tag is nothing, actually odds are he will not have drawn a great tag in that time frame.

you saw the odds yourself, with hunderds to 1 why is he surprised he has not drawn yet?

Look at other units that get less apps, still great hunts but better odds. IT will be worth the wait to I bet.

Good luck, I put in for 25 tags a year, for 7 years now, and I have drawn exactly 1 (hoping for more this year) many are long shots at sheep tags but some are easy to draw bow elk tags with 25% odds or better and I still do not draw. Do not feel bad!

Good luck and again, look at some of the "lesser" LE units, great hunts & better odds.
