After 15 years I finally got a tag. Pahvant early rifle. Does anybody have any input, hints, cordinances? Not asking anyone to give away thier secrets just some information. I have spent some time there and know where most of the elk hang, but maybe someone knows of a sleeper spot, or honey hole.

You are the envy of most of us here!
Rent some "Trail of the Sportsmen" videos, and work yourself into a frenzy.
You dogggg.

Savor the moment friend! You have one of the worlds best public land Elk tags! Shoot the first bull you see.....

A seirous and hart felt CONGRATULATIONS. I'm no expert, but by all accounts, that is one GREAT tag.
We, the MM regulars, will expect a detailed hunt report with photos, posted here shortly after your hunt.
Good luck ( like you need it ).

here is my brothers bull 2 years ago. He was 17, and killed him the 2nd morning. Passed up 25 bulls the first day. Shot him on the south end a litte south and east of molly's nipple, just outside of the CWMU down there. Tons of bulls. We had seen bigger scouting and I know we could have killed a bigger one, but for being 17 I think he was able to contain himself from shooting for only so long. He is still so excited about his bull, and very proud.

And so am I of him. Went 360 with 20 eyeguards and only a 36" IS.

Thanks guys. I know the caliber of elk that are on this unit, so I don't think I'll shoot the first one I see. I will give you a detailed report with pictures once it's all over. Have any of you spent much time in this unit?

Thanks for the info Jason. That's a nice bull. Bigger than the bull I killed when I was 17. I'm going to hold out for something just a little bigger. I'm hoping to harvest one in the 390+ class. Tell your brother congrats on his bull it's a nice bull. I've done some scouting near Molly's Nipple and located a nice bull there last year. It was probably 380 B&C.

I spend some time on this unit and I don't know anyone who drew an elk tag. Send me a PM if you want to chat.

Spent a week on the Pahvant last year helping friends. Watched a bull I called the bucket bull, love it when the brows make the backend look so small, and they still go 380+. He should still be around waiting for you.

Sounds like a 390 bull will be easy. Everybody seems to know where they are. My advice, is to look at a lot of bulls before the hunt, and just take one that you will be happy with. If 390 bulls are that popular up there, why hasn't everyone else killed one? Just wondering how everyone knows where those 390+ bulls are except the guys with the permits? :7

AR,
Sometimes those 390" bulls shrink a little when they hit the ground!!! It always amazes me how many people know where every big bull on the mountain is, until it comes the time to hunt them.

Bigolmuley,
That is a cool picture of Jesse's bull, I was watching some of the video we shot with you guy's just the other day. Tell Jesse I said hello.

Later,
L.T.

I don'[t know for sure, but I bet Molly has quite a few nipples scattered all over??

Work to hunt!! Live to hunt!! And the rest spent keeping the wife happy!!

Heartshot.
Yes, you're right Molly's Nipple is on the Manti. It's Mary's Nipple on the Pahvant. Mabey sisters, either that or Molly has some very, very wide cleavage! :)

Last I heard they took a few bulls off the Pavhant in 05 that went 380+, if any unit in the state can produce them the Pahvant can and does each year. Plus it's often the case the better bulls are glassed by the time the hunt starts - word gets out and down they go.

Roper, nice to hear from you. Wish you could have been there for the shot, he did well, 338 yards just dropped. Would love to get a copy of that video.

By the way, Jesse just got his mission call. Dublin, Ireland. He is pretty excited. We just got back from the Jackson Hole antler run, was fun, but got skunked.

Hope you guys kill some big ones this year.

I have been asked to guide a few hunters this year for an outfitter I know, have decided to do it, but still a little unsure about giving up my own hunting time for others. But it should be fun.

I agree with A.R.! I have spent alittle time on the mountain myself, just dont think you're going to shoot your dream bull where you have been watching him all summer! He might move into the next unit by hunting time. So find more then one you would be happy with, just a little advice, but what do know!

Hey Roper,
What's up...
I keep forgetting that when a bull drops that he usually looses 20 or 30 points...LOL...
It's just that you hear everybody saying they saw this 390 bull here and this 390 bull there. I know we've both been on the mountain once or twice, and I don't remember that many of those bulls being quite that big!
I just hate to see guys set their mind on a bull that scores XXX and then be disappointed when they knock one down and get over to it and it seems to have shrunk! The experience is what it is all about. When you make the decision to shoot, you had better be happy with your choice. I've seen too many guys get nervous or trigger happy, and then be upset with their hunt. Most guys would give anything for a tag like this, so just appreciate the opportunity to hunt such a quality unit.
Let's hope they can all find the "bull of their dreams"!

Congratulations on a great tag. Be sure to post up a story of your hunt after it's over.

Good luck!

Dan

Elkslyr,

You do have what was the best tag in the state---last year. I am not sure I would set my sights so high. 390 is kind of big. You have a chance for sure, but realistically your standards are kind of high.

I am not sure if you know this, but when people draw Utah they immediately start hearing and thinking 380+. Even on Pahvant getting one that big will take lots of luck or time. Probably both. Seems like in Utah it is a crap shoot as to which unit will be tops from year to year. Hopefully you can help make Pahvant that way again.

KTC

Yes, I have set my standard high, and positivley expect to meet it. I have spent time on this unit and know the caliber of bulls on it. I know there are only a few bulls that meet this standard. However, I figure if a spend every weekend until the hunt scouting, which I plan on doing. I have a much better chance than most hunters.
If I were like some other "Hunters" who hunt these units and pay some guide outrageous amounts of money to "Scout" my unit would you then think it was an un-realistic standard?
"Dream big, score big" :D

"Keep your powder dry"

Yes, I would think it is unrealistic to pay a guide and expect a 390 bull.

I guess your thread prompts me to ask you a question. Do you know what a 390 bull is and would you pass a 380, and go home without, to meet your standard? If your answer is a truthful yes my hat goes off to you.

You are right. Scouting and time will better your chances. Remember though that the summer bulls will be in the rut areas. What have you seen so far? How much growth do the bigger bulls have? Just wondering what the first two weekends of scouting have produced?

Hey Tinesup, Nice to hear from you. I know you understand what I am saying about how "easy" it is to kill a 390 bull. Yes, it is a possibility but not a guarantee.

And I agree with ktc, that if you can see a bull, and within a few seconds of seeing that bull, know the difference between 380 and 390, my hat goes off to you also. I know a lot of guys who have ton of experience chasing and guiding bulls, who will tell you that they have misjudged more bulls, than they have judged correctly. Sure a guy can make an educated guess on what a 380 bull will look like, but from 200 yards, can you judge the mass, the length of all the tines, the spread, main beams, etc.? For a bull to reach 380+ he has to have everything going for him, and to reach 400 he needs to be exceptional in every area of his rack. If a guy can't be happy with a 350+ bull, then he may be very dissapointed when he walks up to the bull he shoots and starts finding things that will cause the "sought after score" to shrink.
Just go out and enjoy the experience, find a bull that you will be happy with, and create a memory. Don't set yourself up for dissapointment. Sure, have a dream, but remember to leave some reality in your dream, and then go and live your dream!
I had been watching a few 375+ class bulls on my archery hunt, but I was ecstatic when my bull hit the ground, and I never knew the score until the next day. It was a memory that I wouldn't want changed, and I would love to do again if I ever had the chance. I set my "realistic" dream for a 330 class bull, and would have been happy with that. Most of the people who come in my office and admire my bull, don't know squat about scoring an elk, and the most common comment is "that is a beautiful elk".
And it is a reminder of a wonderful, memorable hunt for me. I got what I wanted, memories!
Hope everyone that has drawn a tag this year, can come away with the same enjoyment from their hunt that I had..

AR,
You said it as good as it can be said. You and I have the same passion for big bulls, the best to all who have drawn tags.
Good Luck,
L.T.

Thank you all for your comments and PM's. I know the challenges, time, experience, and LUCK! I'm going to need to meet my expectations. AR & ktc you are both right and I share your same passion for big bulls. Getting a big bull is not my only objective when hunting, I to do look forward to the memories of the hunt. Every hunt I've ever been on is special to me. I'm just hoping this one has something just a bit more memorable then all the others. One again thanks to all those who gave advice and input. Let's just wait and see what unfolds this fall.
