Arizona Draw

AZBULLS

Ok, I finally decided on the units I want, and have applied for this year. Now the wait begins. Who else is applying for AZ, and have you done so already?

Just got back from hunting turkey in Penna and will be looking into the draw. I just got my Garth Carter service Mag so I'll see what they say to put in for. Good luck and happy hunting.

My nephew and I applied yesterday. With all the bad press about the drought, maybe a few less applications will be submitted for tags.

I just applied. Always archery for me as I have never had a rifle elk tag. My oldest son will turn 10 this July so he FINALLY was able to apply this year. He can't pull back the required poundage on his bow yet so I put him in for a late rifle bull hunt and a rifle cow hunt 2nd choice. Also put him in for a couple of the Jr. deer hunts too. I sure hope he draws because I have waited all his life to hunt big game with him.

Good luck to everyone else wherever you apply.

What rifle do you start the young ones with? My boy turns 10 next June and I'm looking at putting him in for a couple of hunts. He's already a shooter but he hasn't taken on anything larger than his .22 yet. Any suggestions on caliber for 10yr olds that can still stop an elk?

My daughter shot a cow at age 10 with a .243 w/ 100 gr. partitions. The .243 is plenty of gun as long as you keep shots under 150 yards. My son shot a bull at 11 with a .260 Rem 140 gr. He made a great 300 yard double lung shot but needed a follow up shot. That round just doesn't have enough energy at that distance to get good expansion.

The most important thing IMO with kids is good hearing protection even when hunting. I bought some electronic muffs so they could hear me whisper, but it cuts off with the shot. You will have to invest $150 to get them, but good communication is critical at crunch time, especially with a young first time hunter.

Good luck!

I was thinking 25-06 but sportsmans has a nice youth rifle from remington I think. Only comes in .243 and .308 though but it's just right size for kids.

Hey thanks for the replies. I have a model 70 in .270, I'll see how he does with that. I'm just worried about it being too heavy for him to haul around.

I have a .243 and 25-06 to choose from. I would rather him use the 25-06 but I think he might become too attached to the .243. Like muley62 said, we will just have to keep the distance very reasonable if we use the smaller caliber.

He shot the .243 a few times last year but the noise intimidates him a little. He is lights out with the .22 and .22 mag but I need to take him to the range more this summer so he can get used to the larger calibers.

For kids first big game rifle, I like a 7mm-08. 140 Partitions for elk, very mild recoil.

Az elk, I only have 1 point this year, so I'm looking at some of the less popular archery hunts for 1st choice, and maby a late rifle for 2nd.
