I have the early rifle hunt in Mid Oct. for 16C and have never hunted the unit. Looking for basic logistical advice and opinion from those who have hunted it as to how difficult this will be.

Doesn't look like a lot of tags listed so I was wondering if that means few hunter or just lots of LO tags. Anyone know?

Any suggestions on Gas i.e. how far (time and miles) to get to gas station? What about water and cell phone reception?

Any problems with access?

Should I focus on Black Mountain, Work center, up in pines or down in PJ? Are the elk "glassable" or will I have to walk them down? Google Earth view looks like lots of water in tanks and a big stream or two. Is the water seasonal or year round?

You should hire a guide by the name of Larry Meeks. This is an awesome tag. Eastmans cover this month sports a 408 out of C. Larry knows C like no one I know. Let me know if you want his number.

Take a lot of extra gas and water. If you hunt the north part of the unit, Magdelina is the closest gas. If you hunt the south, head down toward Silver City.

We hunted this unit a couple of years ago (second archery) and hunted the Indian Peaks area. We only ran into a couple other hunters. There are some great bulls on this unit. We ran into a couple that would go over 350 and one over 370.

There is some private property but there are alot of good bulls on the forest land.

access into the unit should not be a problem...i will second the indian pks area...a few years back i was deer hunting out there and ended up chasing elk and watching them as i couldnt find any deer...ran into a nice 6x6...another option for gas is winston which is about 30 miles from beaverhead but definately top off before you head off the main highway...
