Can you get a honest, quality bull elk hunt for $5,000, or should I wait and save more money? I feel I would be better off with a guide since this will be my first elk. I would prefer a rifle hunt. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated!

CK, YES YOU CAN....AND A LEGIT CHANCE AT A BIG BULL. WYOMING MIGHT BE ONE OF YOUR BETTER STATES TO CHECK. THAT SAME $$$$ WONT GO REAL FAR IN NEW MEXICO THOUGH...BUT COULD BE DONE. ITS GOING TO TAKE ALOT OF HONE WORK ON YOUR PART, AND ALOT OF PEOPLE WILL MAKE YOU PROMISES JUST TO TAKE YOUR MONEY. BECAREFUL, AND GOOD LUCK. YD.

I think you could have a great hunt for 5 grand.

My advice would be to look towards Wyoming, New Mexico, Idaho, and Montana for a good hunt in that price range.

Wyoming is kicking out some great bulls during the general elk hunt.

There's lots of good outfitters if you draw a general tag.

For the most part Utah is way over priced.

CK, What do you consider a good bull? I know a good outfitter in ID who runs 9 days pack in hunts for 5100 (1x1) and you get to rifle hunt the rut along with deer & bear. We went 3 for 3 on 6x6 's (270,290 & 315) everyone had the chance to shoot a bear & a good whitetail (140s) PM me for more info, Jon

Prism, thanks for the reply. That was my fear of New Mexico - false promises. I will begin to look in Wyoming.

Check out this web address: www.beaverheadoutfitters.com

They hunt the Gila Nat'l Forest and a big chunk of private land. Their hunts are reasonable, and you stand a chance of a real good Gila bull. I have known these guys for quite a while and provide a great service. The Gila is known for huge bulls, and I have hunted here many times on my own. Good luck.

I'm also interested in a guided elk hunt for a decent price. Does anyone have anymore referrels for good outfitters in Wyoming or Idaho?

>Try Pass Creek Outfitters in Wyoming.
>Eight hour horse back ride
>in but well worth it.
>$4800.00 I believe for 2007

Tell Grant to update his web site. I'm waiting to see my hunt photos posted in there somewhere...

Ther biggest part of how good your hunt is is where you hunt! Draw a premo rifle tag and hunting alone you can easily get a 300 bull.

Way to many guys overlook this aspect. Best guides cannot get you to a bull that does not exist there!

If you wait to draw a good tag, most guides then cost $3000-$4000. Add in license, tip etc at travel and you are around $5,000

Where you are hunting is key, sure tags, in a good area add at least $2000 to a hunt, often over $4,000. Draw that tag and it saves you the $$$$$

try boulder creek outfitters, unit 14 in idaho. combo mule deer and bull elk 7-day ranch hunt for 4800.00. last year 15-hunters shot 15-bulls, and 10-deer.great hunt, accomodations, and outstanding food!!! probably sold out for 07, ask for tim craig 1-208-486-6232 tell him rick said hi...

5K is reasonable. I have some friend here in AZ that run a guiding outfit. They will work their butts off to get you the bull you are looking for, as long as your reasonable. You have to remember, its hunting.

Get references, spend your $$ wisely.

Is that ethical?

Is what ethical? I guess getting recent references are the best way to learn about an outfitter.

Don,
I agree with you except for the fact that the "best guides" will hopefully not take you where there are not bulls. You can get a public land hunt for $4000 or less from some of the best guides in the business.

It's always an adventure!!!

What I meant was a great guide OTC in CO cannot show the the elk he could if you were in a premium AZ or Utah unit. Not to say they would not do there best but all units are not created equal. Many guys looking for their first hunt out west have no idea the vast difference in quality of units that exists, I did not realize it until I started looking.

Start out by finding a good area to hunt, then find a good guide.

got it - I'm not too sure of the good areas, but I think I can get a pretty good indication just by reading the posts on Monster Muley's and doing other research.

This sounds to basic to be true but it is, to find a good area just look at draw odds. Best areas have worst odds. Rougher areas where elk are far from roads have slightly better draw odds but still, worst odds = great hunting.
