LAST EDITED ON Jan-08-04 AT 09:11AM (MST)[p]36" Mule Deer
400 Pt Bull
170+ Ram
90+ Goat

I don't know maybe it is just me but the animals listed above are very incredible but some people claim to see them on every hunting trip they take. I would love to believe guys that tell me this because man it would be awesome for animals like these to be everywhere. IT JUST SEEMS LIKE THE SAME GUYS OVER & OVER AGAIN ARE TELLING ME ABOUT THESE LARGE ANIMALS & AFTER A WHILE WITH OUT ANY PROOF I JUST GET BURNT OUT ON THE WHOLE THING...

I am not saying that these creatures aren't out there because they are but man you just don't see them everyday. I AM NOT AN OLD TIMER BUT I HAVE BEEN HUNTING SINCE I WAS 10 YRS OF AGE & I HAVE ONLY SEEN A FEW ANIMALS OF THIS CALIBER.
Examples:

36" Muley----I have never seen one except for pictures of dead ones. I have seen a few 30 inchers & that is a hell of a BUCK at least in AZ now days.

400 Pt Bull----I have seen a COUPLE that I thought may go but they may not have, that was until this year when I watched my cousin mis a bull that would go 420++++++++++++++. I HAVE PROOF, IT IS ALL ON TAPE!!!!!!!!!

170 Ram-----In YEARS past I have seen a COUPLE that were close. I have also seen a few dead ones that my dad had helped with.

90+-----I HAVE NEVER SEEN A GOAT THAT WOULD GO 90+ ALIVE. I did mis a buck with my bow that would probably go in the mid 80's & may have been high 80's if he did not have a busted prong (Got it on tape).

I HAVE FOUND THAT IT IS NOT EVERYONE TELLING STORIES BUT JUST A FEW TELLING THEM OVER & OVER AGAIN. I HAVE A FRIEND WHO EVERY YEAR TELLS ME HE SEES 35" 9x30'S, no matter where he goes....I just get tired of hearing this stuff & seeing no proof but I guess that it is just people trying to sound big. I still have not figured it out yet, why can't some people just say what it is, its okay to be excited but don't just outrite make up a bogus story.

BOTTOM LINE IS THE LITTLE BOY THAT CRIED WOLF DID IT ONE TO MANY TIMES!!!!

THANKS & I AM GLAD I GOT THAT OFF OF MY CHEST

I think some guys really think they are looking at record class animals. Until they can actually hold one in their hands or measure some horns they will probably keep thinking they are seeing big animals. Some do it for ego to be the envy of friends. These are the folks that are just plain stupid.

I agree. Until you have held the antlers in your hands and put a tape on them, you really can't know for sure how big an animal is. It takes years and years of experience and a very good eye to be able to field judge trophy animals. Even after personally shooting or being a part of a hand full of hunts that resulted in trophy bucks, it is still very challenging for me to estimate how good a buck will score. It helps if you have video or pictures to look at and study.

I know a fella that swore he shot a 54" bighorn sheep. In the nicest way I could I told him he was full of crap. Come to find out he was measuring both horns!

I have learned over the years that folks who really dont command much respect will try anything to be heard. Just human nature I guess.

Some people have a gift, a gift of finding big mule deer, big elk. Trust me I know a few of them. Sure I've heard the stories from the old days, back when monsters were on every mountain. I don't need proof. You see, stories are what make hunting, hunting. TO come back to camp and say "You shoulda seen the buck I saw!" It keeps people going out there for the chance to maybe see one of these majestic beasts. Sure now and again people get glimpses of these monsters on camera, but not everyone carries a camera. Hunting stories put a smile on my face from the time I was knee high to a bullfrog, and yes I was really that damn small. I could fit into my uncles shoe at 6 weeks :p. You see, stories keep the blood pumping, the smiling muscles fresh. Reguardless if they are true or false, hunting stories carry a certain magic to them. To tell a kid a hunting story on even the darkest of days can put a smile on his face. I know some of you have seen it, with your children, your neices / nephews, Your relatives. I know I have.

Cass,

I could not agree more. I love listening to old timers talk about the good old days & hearing about monster bucks. I love the idea that everyday that I wake up I may have a chance at a huge muley but the stories get old an worn out if they are not THE TRUTH & I don't mean just a little exaggeration but some people will just outrite LIE. I am not saying that the animals aren't out there because THEY ARE!!! It all comes down to if you cry wollf to many times nobody is going to believe you anymore..

Quote from AWESOME BULLS:

" I have been hunting elk for 20 yrs & have only seen a handful of bulls that would score at or near 400"

I work with a few guys that always seem to pass on 5 bucks that were 28 wide, sometimes you wonder if they know what 28 wide is? Some people are just full of crap and it's not that hard to tell who they are. However I grew up in Manti and the man next door allways seemed to get a big buck or bull. He had several sets of antlers That were big ole monsters. I think someone mostlikely his dad had clued him in on some of the secrets you must know to get big animails. Sometimes you do get lucky and someone else steps on a big buck and he runs across a hill right in front of you.
Did anyone ever see the gost buck on the manti face sometime around 1974 to 1978. now he was a whopper!!!

I agree with the posts above about hunting is also being of stories. Its there story. I used to talk of seeing nice bucks and bulls so I went out and bought a video camera. Now if I see something my friends that have seen my tape do not doubt me. Its just getting respect. I know most guys think I BS. But I dont really care. How many guys see huge bucks and bulls and dont say anything? I know guys that wont talk about them. I have 3-4 friends that I hunt with and 2 of them will only tell exactly where they are to us. When asked by others they see nothing. I think it is all in who you want to believe. I get a kick out of people that ask for advice then blow you off after giving it. After alot of guys meet me they blow my advice off. Its funny because i have long hair full of tattoo's. So I guess I do not meet the nature criteria on hunting knowledge. Clean cut. But I have my friends that dont question me. I dont care if someone believes me or not.
But also above it said some people hae the knack for finding them. I totally agree here. So its mostly if you want to believe it or not. Some guys see a buck they thought was huge and ended up being a dink. Huge to them but not to some. Just depends on what some people's expectation is for a mature buck. Not everyone sets there sights on a 150 or better buck.My standards for a buck is wider than there ears (Depends on mass and size) and 4 pt or better.
Just my 2 cents .

I am utterly in shock.

I'm not talking about the topic of this thread at all. I am in shock because Cass has posted a reply that is not only spelled correctly, but with proper punctuation and grammer.

Bravo on a well thought out articulate post Cass.

Craig, you said you have never seen a picture of a 36" buck except for pictures of dead ones. Well here is a picture of a live one. The picture is from last year. The buck is still alive this year. He is even bigger now.

Enjoy.

nice picture. one thing i wish many people would do is explain that they mean inside or outside. although most know when one speaks of a 36in. wide bucks they are refering to the outside spread. when we start talking 30in. or 33in. etc. are they talking about inside or outside? it would be easier if hunters would specify.
thanks for showing us the great picture.
nk

nk,
Generaly they are always talking about outside spread. If we are talking about inside spread for scoring purposes we generaly will always specify "inside". So if the word "inside" or "score credit" are not eluded to than you can be 99% sure that we are talking about outside spread.

YEP he looks to be at least 36 outside. I have seen live ones in pictures but not any on the hoof. IT takes a hell of a buck to make 36 & they just aren't 1,000's of them out there.

Great topic you guys and awesome replys. This is why i hunt to hear stories and to make my own. I know exactly what some of you are saying. i am only 21 have hunted with a gun sense 5th grade. i have been fortunate (sp)? to have a great dad and grandpa that made sure i was always fishing or hunting. Now i have been around to see those guys that always "miss" those monster bucks and come back with those heartbreaker stories or they guys that always get the big ones but yet you dont see pictures or you never see them out in the field. The only reason i know as much as i do is from learning from other sources, but you learn quick who tells the truth and who doesnt. I am a guy that doesnt run around saying where the big ones are or i saw this hear. You know, i have figured out what type of people to stay away from adn who to help out and get help from. like supersider it only takes one time to get burned that you choose waht you say and who you tell it to.

i have seen 4 muleys that were 30inches or above. 3 on the winter range and one while hunting and my dad took that one.

i think the saying that i was told that can be used for hunting or fishing was a fishing story. It is when i asked my dad for a scale to way my fish. He told me your going to find out those 3lb bass you are catching will turn in to 1 lb fish pretty quick. So you guys see what i mean. I was blessed to take my first mule deer that broke the 150 mark this year. i still cant believe it.

Thanks for your time
Garrett
