Oak Creek / Fillmore LE hunt

Can anyone tell me the type of terrain that the Oak Creek / Fillmore unit in Utah contains? Looks like it might be pinyon / juniper from the maps I have seen and the elevation. What about the hunting? Is it good for backpack type hunting or are there a lot of roads?

Thanks

From what I know this is a very steep and rugged unit. This is not an easy hunt some good bucks, could be very good for backpacking. Not allot of roads but it seems like more ATV trails all the time.

Well basically the Pahvant is a rough son of a #####! If you want to take a big bull, then that sure is the right mountain. There really aren't that many roads. If you are looking for a big old bruiser buck then you probably aren't going to have great success, unless you put alot of time in scouting, then you could probably bag a good buck but not a bruiser.

monroemtnshedfreak,

I hate to burst your bubbel but the Pahvant Limited Entery Elk unit is not the one he was talking about. He wanted to know about the Oak Creek Limited Entry Deer Unit. That would be the one on the NORTH side of I-15 not the Pahvant unit that is on the South side of I-15.

I Have scouted this area a little and the country that i was in was really rugged and steep it is a great area for deer. I have found many 30 inchers there that anyone would be glad to take and there are a lot of deer there. but to anyone that is planing on puting in there for elk dont it is a waste of time!

Pines up high, lots of oakbrush/cedars at lower elevations. Access is tough on the north end of the range (fool creek), south end has lots of access. I lived there for quite a few years, and my parents still do, so I still check it out every now and again. This unit really used to suck, would basically just get hunted out every year. Going LE was the best thing that could happen to this unit. I think once we get a few years away from this drought, this unit will rival some of the best in the state. The genetics are certainly there, I've seen many deer and gathered sheds with very impressive mass. The range is pretty isolated, so there are a few genentic problems with the herd, I've seen plenty of 26"-30" 2 points. It is also the only place I've seen antlered doe, seen a few of those. So don't shoot the first wide bugger you see, might be a lesbian fork-horn :) Best area is definatly up Fool Creek peak, but you'd better be in damn good shape if your going to hunt there. South end has some good areas too, top of Whiskey Creek always has some good bucks. Don't over look Mud Springs on the extreme south end of the range if the weather turns foul before the hunt. Ditto reflex_shooters remarks, if your thinking about hunting elk, don't waste your time. The only reason there is a hunt there is because the DWR couldn't eradicate the herd, which last I heard was pretty small. I could be wrong on the elk though, I don't get down there as much as I used to and I have never actually seen an elk on the range, I've heard they like to hang in the farm fields on the south end.

Kevin down at Payson Sports and Trophy hunted this area last season and killed a pretty nice four point around 24-26". I am sure if you called down there he could give you some great info on the area, he is a real helpful guy.

Thanks everybody! I am thinking about putting in for the ML hunt in this area. Debating between Fillmore and the Dolores Triangle ML hunt.
