This year will be our twentieth wedding anniversary. My wife wants to do something very special and memorable. She started out looking at a week at some romantic resort, but decided that it would become boring after a day or two. Then she looked into Central America for hiking through Mayan ruins, but after talking to a few travel agents decided she didn't want to chance encounters with pot and coke growers. Next came the 47,000 different cruise destinations, but we don't drink and really don't enjoy being around a bunch of strangers that over do it.
Finally, she has come to the realization that this might be the opportunity for us to do a once in a lifetime pack-in hunt. We always do it on our own, applying for tags, scouting, setting up camp, and cooking. Hiring someone to do this would be a real treat for both of us (mostly me, since I'm the one that sets up camp and does all the cooking and clean-up).
So here's where I need your help. Point me in the direction of a quality outfit to take us into a wildnerness area on horseback for a week of hunting. When I say quality I don't mean steak and red wine for dinner, I mean a classic hunt in a pristine area with the chance at a good buck, not necessarily a Booner. A good guide that will make this a special event for the two of us.
I'm thinking WY or MT, maybe CO. I would consider NV, but I don't want to burn my points on this hunt, so it would have to be landowner tags. An elk hunt would be okay too. I would spend $10k on this if I really had to, but I would rather spend $5k.
As an alternative, I would also consider a ranch hunt on a BIG ranch with rustic cabin accommodations. This might actually be a better alternative because I would hate to get her 8 hours in on horseback and have her not enjoy it as much as she thinks.
So there it is boys and girls. I'm looking for names and contacts, not just "Go to Wyoming" kind of advice.
