I sure hope the next shot taken by the cameraman was with a rifle. That's pretty sad........

LAST EDITED ON Jan-17-04 AT 10:23AM (MST)[p]I'm just trying to learn how to post pictures from a new host site. I'm not having much luck. Anyway, guess I better explain the graphic pictures. I was scouting for an upcoming deer hunt back in sept 2000. I found this buck trying to water at a little spring thats located in the nasty black rocks of an ancient lava flow. Its anybodys guess as to what happened. I believe he took a header in the black rocks and tore his face off. Bad accidents happen. With another shed season starting(seems earlier every year) I thought this picture would be a reminder to respect the deer and give them plenty of space. For the record, I didnt have a gun or I would have ended his suffering. He walked back into the thick cedars and died hard.

Man that has to hurt!!!

That is sick and sad.
I would shoot that deer even it it meant losing my hunting rights.
Hate to see an animal suffer like that.
Disgusted,
Jerry

Did someone call the game and fish? An elk that someone had shot the bottom jaw off of showed up an the ranch my dad manages and he call game and fish and they let him go finish it off so there are no reason to loose your hunting privileages they hate to see the animals suffer as much as we do

That is messed up. I would put it down. I have in the past. I have put down animals that where hit by cars. Even cow elk. I never even took the ivories out of it. I just shot it and left. I do not like to see them suffer. I will not see them suffer. They found a doe in 49 that had a arrow stuck threw the jaw and F&G went out found it and shot it. i think in a situation like that they would understand.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-17-04 AT 08:31PM (MST)[p]I hope you or the G&F finished him off. That is not cool to let my favorite animal suffer. You also better delete that before any anti?s get a hold of that picture. We don't supply them basterds any more ammo then they already have

Skunkterd,Its not ammo for the antis. Mother nature can be cruel. If youll read my post above, I didnt have a gun. Also if you will look at the picture , the deer is very much alert and mobile. Maybe I should have called a warden? I dont know. The buck wasnt about to stand there and wait for the warden . The area is thick cedars. The warden would have had to either sit on the water or track it up the following morning. He might have been willing , who knows? The fact is , this was a chance encounter with a doomed buck. If you spend much time in the hills, sooner or later you will run into sad situations. A year earlier while hunting we come upon a nice buck caught in a barbed wire fence. We turned him loose but he was to far gone to survive. We called the warden and he ended his suffering. Ive rescued a couple of deer out of fences through the years and yes I've finished off one in the Highway. If I would have had a gun I would have ended his suffering. The point of the post was to remind people to take care when hunting sheds. Deer are vulnreble any time but they really need thier space this time of year. I really dont see what this has to do with the anties, it seems that they dont mind suffering if its due to natural causes.Thier fairly warped.

Mother Nature is a B!tch sometimes ain't she. It's a fact of life. I saw a doe this past spring with no hide on her back. Nothing but black meat. Obviously she survived a close encounter with a cougar. She actually looked like she was fairing well. I have a buddy that shot a 3 legged buck. He didn't know until he walked up on it on the ground. The leg obviously had been missing for more than a year. The buck scored 215 and was in his prime otherwise. $hit Happens. It's sad, But it's life.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-17-04 AT 09:45PM (MST)[p]LMAO this is not mother nature. She has her been shoot in the bottom jaw there Kids!! No punt intended

That was my first impression too - shot in the bottom jaw. I have seen two deer shot like this over the years. The first we chased hill over dale for four hours; the shooter originally said he shot it in the throat. I dare say that were it not for a long range rifle and power scope, our jawless buck would have got away only to die a similary "hard" death.

This buck is way skinny too: spine exposed, nothing in his belly, and looking mighty weak. Death is certain here.

Fin said that he found this deer in this condition in early Sept. Long before rifle hunts begin guys, I have to agree wtih him on this one that the buck took a nasty fall and broke a jaw. Not the result of a bad shot that blew off part of his face. Face it, mother nature sucks sometimes and Darwins theory is right in saying survival of the fittest.

If the buck was shot, it was done by a poacher not a hunter. I came across this buck at least 3 weeks prior to the rifle hunt, which starts the first week of oct on that unit. And no, it wasnt near any CWMU's that hunt with rifles in sept. I honestly believe he wrecked in the black rocks. Something must have caused him to panic . Maybe a lion? Maybe man made? I dont know. I came aross a cow elk once with a wood staub stuck in her eye. She must have run right into a snag while being chased by whatever. Bad accidents happen. No I didnt shoot the cow either. She looked like she was making a living just fine.

Well then it was done by a poacher or a muzz hunter. I was in the hunting business for a longggggggg time. I have seen that many of times during before and after the hunting seasons. Sad but true

You can $hit the tourist but there is no shitting skunk $hit

Yeah, sure looks to be the caliber of buck that people would want to poach huh? That big ole boy must score 105 maybe 107? And look at the body mass if it were a meat poacher. Close to that elusive 435 mark like that Texas deer weve heard about.
