So Far So Good....

This season has been good to us so far. As of right now we have some great deer on the ground.

190" typical, 4x5 29" wide
190" typical, 4x5 with HUGE eyeguards 32" wide
32" 3x3 mgmt deer
195" typical, 4x4 30" wide
234" non-typical, 10x8 30" wide
We also have one that has not been found that is in the same class as the 195" deer according to the guides.

Josh Rector, elk4you, and Alan Taylor, Bura Nut, came down to help out and these guys were tremendous. The giant non-typical was killed in the camp that was being run by Josh and the deer with the big eyeguards was killed in the camp being run by Alan. I owe both of these guys a HUGE Thank You and I hopw that they will come down again in the future.

We still have 4 hunters down there right now and 3 more that will be hunting by themselves next week. This could be our best year if we can knock 1 or 2 more down.

A friend of mine that guides and outfits down there picked up a shed antler that is the biggest I have ever seen down there. It has 18 scoreable points and mass that you will not believe. I will ask him for permission to post a few pics. I roughed the shed at 135"! Its just huge!

DRUMMOND:

Sounds incredible; congratulations on a banner year! I am interested in the "mgmt" buck. By that, do you mean he was pulled from the herd (harvested) to "manage" the genetics in the population?

Congrats again,

***Sperca

Holy Shmackers, thats unreal! That nontyp shed sounds like the find of a century! Wow!

Yeah Sperca, I'm sure they dont want a mature buck that only has 3 points per side running around breeding any more does than he already has. I'd take that management buck any day!!!

Congrats Sonora on a banner season!

Thanks guys.
A "management" buck is a buck that has been located and is not a "quality" deer and never will be. It has got to be a deer that does not have the genetics we want such as weak forks, no forks or other undesirable traits. Normally when we find these deer we will let the hunters take them to weed them from the gene pool before they breed many does. We found a huge forked horn with kickers the other evening and are trying to get him culled but have not found him again. I will post some pics of some MGMT deer.

Would love to see that shed if at all possible Drummond. If the other side is comparable and it goes 30" wide thats a 300 inch deer. Sounds like a really great year, Sonora has got to be one of the best bets for a trophy mulie.

Drum,
Congrats of the successful hunts. Can't wait to see the pics in the magazines. Also looking foward to seeing that big chunk of bone. Post them pics up as soon as possible.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-20-04 AT 09:19PM (MST)[p]Drummond?
I have plenty of illegal immigrants in my neighbor hood & I'm just wondering why they don't bring some of there deer with them. Sure wouldn't mind some border crossing mule deer around here. LOL

Well done Sonora, that quality are always well earned, any Coues this hunt ?
Go whack that buck that shed those horns & cap off year of a lifetime.

Congrats on another super year, Drummond. Sounds like you are doing things right, which should be good in the long run as well. I look forward to seeing the pics of those brutes and the monster shed.

Congrats Drummond, glad to hear you are doing well. Sounds like you guys took some Monsters. Can't wait to see the pics. Good luck on the rest of you hunts.

Great going Drummond! Can't wait for some details!!!

Allen, I'm sure it was an amazing experience for you as well! Good show!

You're killing me Drum! Can't wait to see the pictures and hear the stories. I bet it's tuff sometimes to sit and watch all those big bucks missed/taken all the time. I hope one of these days you are able to get one of these bad boys for yourself. You deserve a big TOAD for yourself.

Drum,

Okay, okay, you've twisted my arm enough...I'll go again next year. LOL If I'm still kicking in 05 I'll be down there for sure. I know I speak for Alan as well in that WE owe you the thanks. I can't wait to see the deer they passed up hit the ground.

Josh

Sounds like you and your hunters had one heck of a great time.
Did you ever get a chance to hunt for any mulies yourself this year?
Cannot wait to see some of your pictures.
Best,
Jerry

Really had a good time, was surprised with the high rack but of course understood how this is the only way to make it happen. Josh and I split up the first day and never saw each other again, (differetnt ranches) and boy is the country big down there. Doe bases is the key and keeping the client happy can be difficult at times not seeing alot of deer. The expectations are high and clients want to see 200" deer behind each mesquite and it does not happen. Keeping your mind into it correctly was the hardest thing for me............. Allen Taylor......

Well, thanks again to Allen and Josh for their help and everybodys kind words. I'd much rather be lucky than good. I do have an update though. We had one hunter miss a giant typical today at 100 yards and again at 175 yards. My partner is calling him 200" and better than 30" wide. We also had one of our hunters and another american guide see a deer yesterday at noon that was so big they cannot even describe it. If they had a toolbox on the truck I am sure that they would have gone to it! LOL Anyway, they are calling him bare minimum 35" wide, massive and tall. They ran into him on the way back to the camp and the deer spooked and according to both the hunter and the guide the deer got his antlers tangled in a tree and it almost got him killed. They said that they were a split second away from killing the deer. They said the the deer was to big to even guess score on. The guide(Ross) that told me the story is a real level headed kid that does not get to excited so to hear him tell this story is awesome. Anyway, I'll keep you guys updated when I get more info.
