Has anyone hunted here before that can answer a few questions?
It looks like to me from the Regs that this area is divided up between Region D & J but not sure as have never been there before.
Looks like Area 70 of Reg. D might have most of this area called Shirley Basin but would like a clarification to be sure.

From what I know about the basin along with the Shirley Mtns, there is not a lot of deer but there are a few good ones. The problem is getting permission on all of the private land. The Difficulty Mtns. are leased out to outfitters and getting close to the range is about impossible. As far as I know it's all in unit 70 except maybe the far east part. Good luck getting permission, Steve

Thanks Steve for the update. I had doubts about this area but that makes sence concerning where I heard about this area being "public land and no fences here"...

Brian,

From what I know, Steve is right on track. There's very little public access,in that area, even on the BLM and state lands. On most of it, you have to cross deeded lands to get there, and there is no access across the deeded ground. If you are considering Region D, I'd look farther south to the Snowies or Sierra Madres.

Brian,

In Shirly Basin proper there is plenty of access for say hunting coyotes or probably antelope but in the hills is where the ranchers get protective. I know the state trapper that runs that district and he's the one that told me all about the area. The area that Jim is talking about gets hit pretty hard by locals and non-residents but there is some big bucks that come off the Snowies and Sierra Madres and if you can get a late season tag you could kill a monster. Unfortunately the word got out on that years ago and a non-residents odds are about 40-1. Good luck, Steve
