LAST EDITED ON Feb-22-07 AT 07:35AM (MST)[p]Do you all like the 7mm mag or 300 wsm for elk? I know it's all preference here, but I wonder what the consensus is? I will also be hunting whitetail and mule deer with this rifle. I'm trying to get one, all around, awesome rifle setup.

Elk can't be killed with a 50 BMG let alone those guns. I saw an elk run down a guy with a 50 and stomp him into the ground. Guy had shot the elk twice but the bullets bounced off. Saw a guy with an 06 standing over an elk last year and was amazed but it became apparent the elk had died of natural causes because you can shove an 06 up an elks butt and it won't even go off from fear.

Sorry, making light in advance of the suggestions you get a 375HH or Fantastomag! You can be effective on all you want with a 308, 06 all the way up the line. Find a rifle brand first that you think fits you well. Then shoot the cal that you can shoot most accurately. If you've not shot mags do so now before you buy one. Whitetail most certainly do not need anything like a mag. Neither do mule deer. It's not sexy but if I were using just one gun for everything I get an 06 and then use from 150 to 200+ grn offerings depending on the game.

I agree with Colville. I have taken elk with the 06 and the 7mm rem mag and both have done the job well. You pick it.

I shoot a Remington XCR 300wsm and love it. It has the extreme conditions barrell and stock on it and the recoil is awesome for a caliber that size.

There are many appropriate elk calibers. More important is the rifle. Find a rifle that suits you and compliments your hunting conditions and learn to use it effectvely.

Your right - I did post that post earlier. I didn't ask which gun I should BUY? I have both these guns - the 7mm and the 300wsm. I about to have some custom work done on one or the other and I plan on putting a top end scope on the one I do the custom work on. That's why I was asking the question.

Good catch?!?!

For me...I'm sold on 300wsm and partial to wood and my Winchester Featherweight. For you...whatever you like. It is nice to shoot a 150 up to a 180 or more because the same gun works on Deer, Bear, Elk, Ex-Wives etc.....However...some do prefer the 375 for the latter for obvious reasons.
