Ok you guys, I have 5 preference points built up and I want to harvest a 160 class mule deer. Ive hunted the yakima training center and dont want to go back there. Probably wont draw "Desert A" any time soon. Dont mind hunting hard core. I would like to hunt the qullomine unit in the more remote parts....Anyone know of the quality of those bucks...Or any other suggestions? Thanks.

LEM,

I've hunted the Quilomene my whole life. I still have an elk camp up there. I drew the tag three years ago and hunted hard for 9 days. I ended up taking a young 19" 4X4 the last morning. It was the only true 4X4 I saw. I hunt hard and am not afraid to climb anywhere.

There are some big deer in there and once in a while you'll see one during elk season but if you are serious about getting a 160 or better buck I would look somewhere else. Alot of the bucks in there have crab claws. If you want any buck it is no problem to fill a tag in there but it is definatley not a trophy unit. the genetics are not there. This winter is gonna be tough on them as well.

If you still want more detailed info. on the area give me a call. I know most of that area very well. With all that being said, it's still my favorite place to hunt and wish they'd open it back up.

My dad shot one of those " crab clawed deer " this year in the quilomene unit on the second day of the season. it was the first time we had been up there and we took it on the second day of the season. it was a ncie on only 3x3( not counting the little fork at the end) but 26 inches wide. i would say put in for the entiat unit becuase my buddy took horses up there and shot a monster a few years back.

There are alot of good units that one can apply for that hold good bucks in the late season. Most are very weather dependent. look at the units from entiat north to the methow. there are nice bucks in all of them that migrate down during the rut providing there is cold and snow.
