LAST EDITED ON Feb-27-07 AT 07:25PM (MST)[p]How many like the new preference point system that Wyoming now uses?Did you know 75% of the permits will be issued to applicants with the most points through a random draw, the remaining 25% will be issued to all remaining applicants(including those with max points that did not draw in the 75% pool)?Give it 5-15 years and it will be like Utah but I think with 75% of the permits going to max point holders you might not see the point levels get so high like Utah and Colorado.
I also think you will be getting the same complaints as Utah does now.How will my kids or someone just starting out ever draw permits when so many have high points.
The answer will be just get in line and wait your turn.
But they should give more permits so they can hunt sooner is what applicants with low points or have drawn a tag will say.
Bonus points can help high point holders but its great someone with 0 points or just starting out can still draw.
Colorado needs to change how they do there points at least give everyone a chance that puts in.I think they should give at least 75% to the highest point holders like Wyomings rule and the rest to everyone that is in.
How many feel Colorado is in dire need of some changes?Only those with max points will say no way leave it alone.75% would still give them great odds of drawing permits and at least some would draw with none.Thats the only fair way if you ask me.
Back to Wyoming elk GOOD LUCK to applicants lets us know what units ya draw around 8 a.m. Feb-28-07 we will know who was lucky and who will not hunting elk this year in Wyoming.

Warbirdum, I agree 100% with you in regard to Wyo elk. There are so few tags issued that draw odds are horrendous even for the guys with max pts. Anyone that has been applying for Wyo sheep and moose know how horrible the odds are with the current Wyo sheep and moose pref pt system. This same thing will likely happen with Wyo elk. Warbirdum pointed out guys just starting out will likely never have a very good chance of drawing one of these tags and I have a feeling he is right! Most Wyo elk units have less than 10% draw odds so not many successful tag holders filter through the system compared to the hundreds of guys that apply! I like the idea of giving everyone a chance to draw really tough draw tags and guys that apply longer a better chance of drawing. Nevada?s bonus pt system is one of the fairest bonus pt systems available for really tough draw tags.

The pref pt system definitely works for Wyo antelope and deer tags since there are a lot of tags issued. Applicants filter through the system fairly quickly in all but a handful of tough draw units. The current pref pt system will definitely work for Wyo antelope and deer...not very well for Wyo elk!

I really like Colorados pref pt system for deer, antelope, and elk. The majority of Colo deer, antelope, and elk units take fewer than 10 pts to draw which is pretty darn good in comparison to how long it takes to draw quality tags in other states. I think it is a fair system in Colo to allow guys w/high pts to draw the tags since applicants filter through the system fairly quickly. Anyone that wants to wait a lifetime for a 2, 10, or 201 elk tag...go for it!

I also like the idea of being able to predict which year you draw which tag. With the current Colo system you can pretty much plan out what year you will draw.

One thing Colo has done with sheep, mtn goat, and moose is to offer a cap of 3 pref pts and bonus pts for each year above the 3 year cap. This same process could be offered for deer, elk, and antelope but I have a feeling guys with close to max pts are going to raise holy h$ll if this or any other new system comes into existence!

Good luck to everyone that applied for Wyo elk..you will likely need it! It is 20+ years without a Wyo elk tag for me but who knows...maybe this year?

jims,
Just think if they would have had points in place for the 20 plus years you have not drawn a Wyoming elk permit.Good luck to you in Wyoming and Utah this year it sounds like it should be your turn to get in on some elk hunting action.

POINTS SUCK! Plus they are costly. I guess they might be OK for hunts you can count on drawing in a reasonable period of time (several to maybe ten years) but are totally unfair and exclusive to all not in the first and every successive year. Plus, they really limit your options once you are in too deep.

The only time I don't like the point system is when I don't have enough of them.

Dude your not being a fair weather fan now are you? But, I guess I'm guilty of the same after not drawing a Wy elk and a MT mule deer tag last year. I hope things turn around tommorrow. Hopefully the website doesn't go down because of all the traffic. Good luck every one!

I have to admit that I sit on the fence on this depending on which state we are talking about. With close to max points in CO. for both deer & elk I would blow a gasket if they mess with the system anymore. I have been ok with the no Non/res for RFW and I understand the 80/20 split is somewhat fair between res/non-res. but after scraping up college tuition $$ years ago trying to send to Colorado and sending more $$ for 15 years I don't want any changes. But, I do agree the CO. system is very unfair, especially to youth hunters. My oldest son is almost 11 now and will he ever get to hunt a premium unit in COLO? Not likely w/o changes. 75% set aside tags for max pointholders like WY. is doing is probably pretty fair to everyone involved.

I agree that Nev and UT have the best points system in place, but I think Idaho's system is the best of all as my sons will have as good a chance as anyone to draw a tag each and every year as long as they (IDFG) resist attempts to implement a points system.

Jims, 20 years w/o a WY elk tag? You must have applied for premium units every year. I won't tell you how many I have drawn in the last 15, all GEN. though.

Good Luck tomorrow guys!!

Hunting dude, I like your attitude! What a subject. I won't even get started but will agree I think Nevada is the best plus it hooks newbies cause they still have a chance to draw but my 13 elk points in Co aren't worth sh!t since the 80/20 split became law.

I agree with HeadHunter in that Idaho has the best system...especially for us old geezers that started hunting out of state late in life.
Now let's get that WYO show on the road !
