Lion sighted

Last saturday I was out watching some winter range deer through the scope. I decided to move to a new vantage point and snuck through the junipers. As I came around a tree I noticed a brown spot at the base of a juniper and thought it to be a bedded deer. Wrong! As I looked closer, a long fury tail rose up and I new instantly I had snuck up on a lion. It had no clue that I was there. Scared the hell out of me. This is the 2nd time I have been close to a lion. It was aprox 20 feet away. I stopped to get my camera out and it heard me and looked over its shoulder at me. I took 2 pictures. It never flinched or moved, just watched me. It had the brightest blue eyes. I threw a rock at it and it didn't react. I slowly walked forward and it finally blew out at ten feet. It was a neat experience.
As it ran through the trees, about 30 deer exploded from their beds and bolted to safer ground. In all the movement, I finally found a buck that I had been looking for since late November. He hadn't moved an 1/8 of a mile since the rut and was still packin head gear and hangin with the same smaller bucks. It was great to see that 30" typical frame through the scope.

I don't own a digital camera. I have had luck of taking a digital picture of a 35mm picture. Will try to get developed this weekend. All the hunting toys I want now are to friggin expensive, what I would do for a digital camera or high end video camera.

I slowly walked forward and it finally blew out at ten feet.

10 feet? Martin remember you can $hit the tourist but there is no $hitting shunk $hit

I sure as hell hope you had a gun drawn at only 10 feet away from a lion. That may be just a tad close to be shooting only pictures my friend. Definately sounds like a neat experience though, glad you shared.

None taken. Have been away for awhile. Actually you made me smile thinkin of how bad you think you are. Great humor though. I can't think of any response to send you that would be justifiable. As I have found so many other times on this site, the machoism and self righteous hunting attitudes seem to float right to the top when someone else shares an experience. Truth? Only you will believe what you want to anyway. Went out again this weekend. Didn't find the lion, but saw 2 coyotes working a small group of does and fawns. Also found 3 more bucks still packing, probably around 26" wide. Snuck across the basin and set up on a ridge under a juniper and they were bedded down. Watched them for about an hour till some horse riders spooked them off.
I get out quite a bit and usually travel alone. Not afraid to walk a ways either. And I have not packed a gun the last 2 months.
I enjoy your comments on the other threads and will keep laughing at what you have to say, always knowing that what I share on this site is TRUTH, the way it actually happened. Lions, bears scare me worse as I am climbing down from the tree stand over bait and walking a 1/4 mile back to the ATV after dark.

just for the record...i have a picture of a female lion and cub that was taken by a professional photographer..don't ask me who... I bought it at a outdoors show. The momma has neon blue eyes, pretty cool looking. I can imagine it would be pretty scarey at 10 feet wondering if your about to become lion dinner.

I have seen a lion at about 30 feet and that was too close. I was hunting though and was shouldering my rifle and the lion bolted. If I hadn't had my rifle I probably would have messed myself. Too many of them around here. The one I saw had big green eyes. But what I remember best was the big white fangs and hiss it made.

If that were me I'd be cleaning out my undies! That's just too close for me. Thanks for the post.

I saw three lions the other day. I had went home for a few days, and i just happened to take my roomate who is from NB and we were out chasing elk out of our hay stack at about 10:00 at night. On our way back all three of them crossed in front of us. At first i just thought they were the neighbor's great danes but then that unmistakable tale could be seen as it jumped side ways.
These three make a total of 6 that i have seen in the past four or five years. Out of these six, five have been seen as they cross in front of me in the late night or early morning.

MARTIN,

You stated above that you took a couple of pictures but then later you said that you don't have a Digital Camera. What difference does that make? Take the 35mm picture, scann it and post it, it is that simple.
If you don't know how to post, there are a number of fellows here that are more than able to post it for you, including myself. Send it as an attachment after scanning and we can take care of the rest for you.

Brian

Heck, just take the negatives to Wal-Mart. Dirt-friggin-cheap. Besides, not only do we want to see it, but that's a picture you want on your computer desktop for sure!

I will try to get some pictures developed and posted this weekend. Between work & school this week it has been a killer. Let me qualify this situation....the cat I saw was not very large. Probably a younger lion. As stated, this was the 2nd time I have come upon a cat. The first was in a snowstorm while hunting deer and the lion had been crouched under a pine watching me come across an open sage meadow. When I got aprox horizontal from it (about 30 yards), I had a notion to quickly look over to my right. When I saw that cat the $hit hit the levis. Adrenaline was way off the scale. I shouldered the '06 and got off 1 shot that probably was not even in the vicinity. Now that was a huge cat. My brother and I tracked it back to a rock cave. We had no idea that cats were in that region.
As stated earlier, I felt more at ease because of the small size of the cat and it was not exhibiting any threatening behaviour. Now if it had hissed or started to crawl away, I would have stroked. I did'nt want to just back out of there for fear of it following me and not knowing where it was at.
