MONTANA BLOCK MANAGEMENT

I'm hoping to draw a non resident deer tag this year. I have made a few calls to the game dept regarding the block mgnt program. Has anyone out there used the program, and if so, let me know how it went? I'm looking to hunt in the Miles City area, which has over 300 registered ranches in the program. I know there is some BLM land in the area and was wandereing how crowded thing get over there. I would skip opening weekend and make one trip over late in the season. Any help is appreciated.

Go to the Montana web page and get the number for the
game dept office in Miles City, the 700 district.
I have had good experiences on block management but like you said opening day can be crowded.
They usually don't come out with the list of ranches till late August so plenty of time to get things orginized.
They have maps in the Miles City office to look at listing the different animals you want to hunt. You can also pick up a left over doe tag if any are available
I thought it was a real nice system
Give them a call, you have lots of time.
Get your tag first. I've found that's the hardest part about getting a Montana deer.

Great idea skipping opening weekend. I'd come as late in the season as you can...

Here are a few thoughts:
There are some REALLY bad block management areas. Some are overgrazed, no cover, over hunted, etc. Some are enrolled in Block Management because no outfitter or rich guy wants to lease them. Look very carefully at the type of cover that is around the ranch, trees, draws, streams, etc. You can do this by looking at arial photos (I think its www.terraserver.com) and more detailed maps.

I went on one down by Broadus that might have had a few jack rabbits, that's all...

Some are excellent and take only a few people each day. I think the best are Walk In Only (it will show you this on the block management book). Look for Walk In Only, great cover and tons of acreage. This way you avoid the ATV/Road hunt crowd and, if you walk off the road a mile or so your chances of seeing someone else are very slim. You can find a great place to hunt this way, but you must reserve your weekend very quickly after the information come out or you'll be out of luck.

Take as many days as you can when you come out. If you only have a few days and you reserved a place that stinks, you screwed. If you give yourself a chance to go to other places you're much more likely to have a great experience.

If you do draw a tag and find the block management places cruddy, you've got a few hundred thousand acres of public land, BLM and State, to hunt. Just find a place where the ATVers can't go with good cover and terrain and you'll have a great chance of success. Just get way off the road! There are some very nice deer on public land, but you've got to work for them.

Hope the cold and snow doesn't wipe out too many deer this year.

Hope you draw a tag! If you don't this year, keep at it.

have hunted the block management areas with some success.the farther back in the booneys the better. the stuff i was on had both muley an whitetails talk to the land owners they are mostly good honest people. they will tell you more whities or more muleys. some of the stuff i was in there were no trees. or very few just deep draws so don't think there is nothing there. saw lots of deer one big whitetail that got away.so check it outan good luck. if you need more info let me knowhelp you all i can.

i hunted on block management land and saw 300+ deer in a full day of hunting. i got my doe. saw several bucks one guy took a 6x7 out of there that day. good land but get far back off the roads. it may look like theres no cover but the deer just kind of appear.

Thanks guys for all the replys. All I can do now is hope I draw a tag. I will spring for the 20.00 optional bonus point so if I don't draw this year, I will have a decent chance in 2005. All of you guys said go for the walk in areas which sounds good to me. My father in law is coming. He is in decent shape, but has had some heart problems in the past so we'll have to watch that.
It takes a few years to draw a decent tag in Washington, so I'm stoked to get outa Dodge and see some new country!!!!!

Save your $20.00 it is a joke the way that is set up, you are not "guarantied" a thing by giving another $20.00.
I drew two years in a row and no $20.00. Save the money for gas.

I agree with save your money!! I did not draw for four years and as soon as I did't give them the $20 I drew - go figure. I guess they thought I would continue to apply if I kept giving them the $20 bucks and when I didn't they gave me the tag so I would apply again. I know that is not how it works but when the buds draw every year with no $20 and I don't draw with the $20 it sure make you wonder. :7

On the flip side......
I've drawn two years in a row and have bought the bonus point.
We've made some good friends in E. Mont. and will be getting L.O. Sponsered from now on. The main ranch is a small spread,
5 miles wide and 7 miles long.... should be able to find a buck some where.....
