Ok guys Im in a predicament a good one at least. Just found out the wife is pregnant and due early November, we are very excited. Just happens to be when we had our Fort peck deer hunt planned followed by elk hunting out of Hamilton for a 15 day hunt. Obviously Im not going to be available to go anytime in November now, for good reason. So I have been searching crazyly for info on September/early october deer elk combo guided hunts that are still available. I will have a tag, Ive put in for the combo with 3 points in hand. I am a very accomplished bow hunter, so I could do either an archery hunt or rifle. I was thinking somewhere in the Bob Marshall but havent been able to settle on someone just by surfing, does anyone have any buddy they highly recommend or have used before. It will be a solo hunt and am willing to pay for a fully guided deal. I am not expecting my buddys to change the dates of our planned hunt so Im going early before the babys born. HELP PLEASE. I have good experiences with eastern Montana, Panhandle of Idaho and good old washington info, if someone needs help. Thanks James

Were you guys going with a guide out of hamilton? I live here and i couldnt imagine blowing cash to hunt this region. Its poor. I always drive east or to the bob. Though there is lots of company (congestion) and shopping to do in this area ;)

No, it was going to be a self guided hunt out of Darby. I am looking for a last minute guided hunt now. Thanks

Ive never hunted with a guide, but you might take a look at Sun Canyon Lodge, and Cheff's Guest Ranch. THey are both backcountry, especially Cheff's, and they seem do to well. Darby pretty much sucks now days, lots of hunters combined with lots of wolves combined mean most days i take my rifle or bow for a long walk and thats about it. Its not at all like it was a few years ago. I live for getting to hunt out of this stinking valley, but its where my job is so......

RockyDog, I live in this "stinking" valley too. Take a bull almost every year. Lots of doe tags, and a good muley buck in 2006. Can't complain. mtmuley

Am i the only guy thats noticed some of the guides out of darby advertise trophy muleys and show pictures of 270 bucks? i think its unfair to show these animals and then take their hunters across the highway, where its a whole nother story.

I suppose it is misleading, but there are some quality deer on the other side too. Just not as many. mtmuley

lots of implants think its great, they can have it and its mediocre bucks/bulls. Sure its got some ok hunting, but all im saying is if i were gonna buy a $600 NR tag and/or spend big cash on a guide, the last place on earth it would be is a small valley filled with 50,000 people not to mention the missoula with 80,000 people+. For the money, there are much better places. -

Bearhunter, You might try Elk Cr. Family Outfitters in Central Montana. I know he has hunters that are waiting to see if they draw the Non res. tags. He is taking back ups and it sounds like a sure bet for you on drawing. It is an awesome archery elk, deer, and antelope hunt on private land. They are located in the Little Snowies. Some monster bulls in that area because it is so private. See www.bowhuntelk.com and give Dave a call. He would gladly answer any of your questions. I highly recommend them.

Bob M wilderness - I've been out several times with Whitetail Ranch Outfitters (wtro.com - I think). EXCELLENT staff, camp, food, stock, etc. etc. Elk hunting was good. No huge elk, but very, very respectable bulls. And in decent numbers. Did manage one slammer mulie out of their camps, even though we primarily hunt elk and shoot deer as a "bonus" if opportunity knocks. Two trips with 5 guys per camp = 3 dead bulls, about 10 really good bull opportunities (misses, bad legs, etc.) 3 bucks (even though they were not targeted). Keep in mind that out of those ten guys, only four of us were "serious" [read- willing to go anywhere to get an elk] hunters, so with that said those stats are pretty good. That's a realistic 3 for 4 ratio. Can't stress enough the quality of their operation. If you speak with them, tell them Ed P. from PA recommended them.
Good luck! and Congratulations!
