I'm sure they don't want to post the odds since when people see how much of a "chance" they had this year, it would make them reconsider spending as much money next year...
It would be nice to see them regardless.
I think it is only fair to be honest and to show them.

I thought for sure they would have had them posted by the end of January/early February....

I don't see what the big deal about them is for not wanting to post them or just ignoring a simple question.

They are public tags given for the Expo..convention.

I think if we pushed the DWR they might release the info. I am pretty sure the others wont. All I heard was over 25,000 people applied for 200 permits. the simple odds would be over 1 in 125. I would bet most applicant were for elk, deer, and the OIL hunts. All I know is I beat tremendous odds. I know it is better to be lucky than good! If you guy's hear the actual numbers please post them!

Chad

How about the guy who actually drew a limited elk and a premium deer tag out of that 200 permits. That doesn't seem real fair does it? His odds to draw two permits (especially deer and elk) had to be one in a million.
Some guys (not me) have all the luck!!!

But I'm a sucker and it's kind of like the Sportsman's permits, I will keep putting in.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-14-07 AT 01:31PM (MST)[p]1 in a million or so. If the odds were truly 1 in 125 for both units, his odds of drawing two tags is 1 in 15,625.

Looking at the odds of a premium deer (10 permits) if the 25,000 number is correct is 1 in 2500. The odds of a bull elk permit (51, if I counted correctly) are 1 in 490 making the odds of drawing both 1 in 1,225,490.

I wonder how many people that are amazed by his incredible luck buy a lottery ticket where the odds are 1 in 18,000,000.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-14-07 AT 01:29PM (MST)[p] I would think that all of this data is required to be provided to the Division as part of the process and safegaurds
that a few sportsmen demanded.

This being the case there are very few documents that the
FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT ( FOIA 1997 ) excludes from public view. All ya have to do is ask. The Govt. has the right to be compensated for any copies made.

I sent an email this week asking to be updated on the RAC survey that closed a few weeks back.

It works and it's the law

I am not really very interested in the overall applicants on a total basis...

I am mainly interested in the applicants by species/weapon-season.

Then they wonder why the 'conspiracy theory' get started.

Guess I'll jump thru the hoops and get them via the DWR... and then I'll post them on every website so all can view.

Robb

Sorry to double post but here is what the DWR replied back to me;

You will need to call the Hunt Expo people for that information. Sportsmen
for fish and wildlife, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Mule deer foundation,
and FNAWS were all part of the Hunt Expo. You might want to do a web
search to find the contact numbers for these conservation groups.

Thank you for contacting us!

Our fisheries biologists say that this year is supposed to be one of the
BEST years for angling in quite some time. So stop in at any license agent
or go online at www.wildlife.utah.gov and get yourself one of the new 365
day fishing licenses!

This is a sad refelection on Utah's DWR.
Firt off with all the publicity the expo received, I would hope the DWR would know the RMEF was not part of the organizations involved.
Second it leaves some doubt as to auditing factors involved with conservation tags. I would believe the DWR would require this information as part of the accountability process. I bet we need to just dig deeper to find out the odds. I will be meeting with some DWR personnel Monday I will try and ask.

Travis

Did Don Peay not say that these odds would be posted? I could
be wrong but even so, the odds should be posted. I am also
waiting for an SFW rep to respond to this thread.

For all the battles and arguing about SFW, I am surprised we cannot get a response......

Todays Email response from the DWR said to contact Ryan F.... as he was the one that held the resposibility on the Expo draw and would be the one with the info we/I seek...

I got this to say about Ryan F... that kid was there at the Expo sunday am on thru the whole dang event and he had laptop and sweat going by 8am....every stinking day...

I know because I was there from Sunday thru wednesday and that young fella was all about the Expo. ( Tony Abbott-MDF didn't slack off either)

No way in hell am I going to turn this simple question into some kind of cirlce jerk towards Ryan F....

So forget about it...Like I aint going to give my fair share $$$ for a daydream Expo tag next February....

I tryed.....it is all about respect for effort now...

Robb

Well I guess I'll ask Ryan. Ryan what were the odds?? Don told us a few days before the expo how good they were going to be.

I do not think they will ever tell us! We knew the following Monday who the lucky hunters were and so they knew that day what the draw odds were. I't has been over two months and they still haven't told us, because they aren't going to in my opinion. They do not want to discourage us from doing the same thing next year and the next. There are 87,433 sportsmen in Utah with at least one elk bonus point. There are 24,062 sportsmen in Utah with at least one deer bonus point. There are 56,298 out-of-state sportmen with at least one elk bonus point. There are 13,367 out-of-state sportmen with at least one deer bonus point. Most of these numbers are separate individuals because you can only put in for one species in the Utah draw. This brings the total to 181,160. This doesn't count the people putting in for antelope. I am going to be real conservate with my estimate on how many people put in for like the Fillmore Pahvant elk Expo tag, because if any body put in at least $5.00 it would be for that tag. I say a third of the 181,160 sportsmen put in for the Pahvant tag which is approximately one in 60,000. Until they come clean and tell us what the odds were at the Expo I'm just sticking to the Sportmans Permit draw which is approximately one in 6,000 which is ten times better odds and ten times better tag because you get to hunt for four months. Sorry!

That info is public information. You go the proper authority and fill out a release of public records. They have to give it to you, but they can charge you for it.

Why would or should we have to pay for it? Didn't we pay for the chance to win one of the tags? And if I remember right, we were told the odds would be posted. What are they trying to hide? We all know the odds are going to be bad, but so what? We are just asking to see the figures. If they are going to be this secretive, I'll save my money next year. It sucks when you support something like the expo, and then they won't even keep to their word to post numbers!
Oh well..

UCNE Those odds are terrible......maybe next year they will come up with some more mismanagement permits so they will bring our odds up to 1 in 30,000 for a fillmore tag....I thought the sportsmens odds were bad!!!!!! Just remember girls........odds are you'll only get one limited entry elk tag in your lifetime so make it count. BRING HOME A BIG STINKY ...as Bob would say.

Ryan just emailed me. Here is his response:

"I do not have a breakdown yet for drawing odds on the expo. I need to sit down with Greg Sheehan with the DWR to go over the statistics. We want to make sure they are correct and also compare them to the Utah regular draw odds.

We had 10,500 applicants and most applicants did not select a pre-set package so the hunt units will vary on odds.

I will have something on the website soon.

Thanks

Ryan Foutz
WHCE Drawing Coordinator"

I'm sure that most of those 10,500 applicants applied for all the "big" hunts. 1:10,500 aint bad. ;-) I will be VERY suprised if any of the OIL or Elk tags had better that 1:4000 odds.
