i see the fish and game website says dont apply unless you have private property permission. i thought there was a fair amount of public land in the unit. any one care to share some info on land status and deer #s. thanks

Deer #'s are way down.There will be pockets of winter-kill.Have already lost some.Could be bad if it keeps going like it has.This herd seemed to peak in the late 90's and has been going sharply downhill since.Lots of cats, dogs and now wolves have been spotted.Mostly private with the public land getting lots of pressure.

Lookout is mostly private just like the synopsis says. The ranchers aren't friendly to hunters either. I agree with what has been said about the herd. Not good. Lots of cats and winter kill might be bad this year. The biggest problem is knowing where to hunt on what little public land there is. I was taught this area by some locals and have a leg up but have my doubts about my chances for a big buck this year. All that being said, I still have to hunt Lookout just one more time. But, honestly I don't think it is going to be worth the wait/pref.points.
