I'm going to hunt Desolation Unit for deer, not sure about elk, actually put post out on elk post asking how best to use my 6 preference points. Will probably end up hunting spikes this year and keep saving for a Walla Walla unit hunt next year, or year after.

Best of luck to everyone in drawing this year.
Thanks

I'm still hoarding points right now. There are too many out of state critters that have my attention right now to waste a week in Oregon. I'll still bowhunt the NE corner a bit, but nothing I have to apply for with a bow. New Mexico, Arizona, Montana, and Alaska are all in the frying pan at the moment. Oregon doesn't come close to being second to those, so any decent buck or bull that comes too close this year is going to get it. I'll spend a little time in Heppner, Hells Canyon, and SW Oregon during early September though.

My son and I have 2 points for buck deer, but I haven't a clue of a decent unit for mule deer. He killed his first deer last fall(a doe) on his first time hunter tag, but would love to find an area where he would have a good chance for a buck.

I normally just hunt Blacktails in the brush and timber near Mt Hood, but that's a tough proposition for a kid!

My hunting partner and I normally bowhunt for elk between John Day and Burns(he lives in Canyon City). We've been applying for the Walla Walla bow tag for several years, might have a chance at drawing this year with 7 points.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-25-04 AT 04:23PM (MST)[p]Hey treekiller I live and hunt around the Burns country, any luck on the elk hunt for the 2003 season ? It was my 1st year bowhunting so it didnt amount to much except a learning experience which is kool.

This years Les Scwabs Big Buck contest winner came out of the Owyhee Unit you could check out the Oregon Big Game book as well (edition 3 is that latest I think that should give you a good idea of where the big ones might be.

Hawkk33...I have all three of the Oregon record books, love looking at all the old photos and reading about the various hunts. My son would be just as happy with a forked horn as he would be with a big 4pt. Myself, I enjoy hunting the big stinky Blacktails in the rut! LOL

My hunting partner took a nice 5x5 last fall, but I didn't loose an arrow. The previous two years I took bulls on Sept 11th. I hunt with stickbows, so my range is limited to 20-25 max. The country closer to John Day is getting overrun with non-residents!:(

I've been bowhunting for 20 years, and still get spanked by the aniamls on a regular basis. LOL So don't get discouraged about not bringing home the meat!

I'm over on the damp side of the state in Tillamook. I'm building points again for deer after I drew a Pine Creek tag two years ago.
I'm considering the Steens Moutain for my daughter who can get a youth "First Time" tag. Have any of you guys hunted that unit recently?
Good job on the paper oldoregon.
Its been a while since I last posted but this is still the first site I check out when I get to work in the morning. Take care.

I can vouch for you comment about the non residents. We have a piece of property of near Seneca and last year 2 poaching puss bubbles were on it trying to get to a herd of elk. I wasn't around to kick any a** as I was off chasing the herd that they spooked. But when my buddy asked if they knew they were tresspassing they just said arrogantly said "yeah we know" and walked off amd I know they were non residents because people around here are polite and respectful.

Haven't hunted the Steens but I hear good things about the Trout Creek Mtns to the south of them. Good luck to your daughter on her hunt and you are gonna love the Steens even if you dont get anything.

Just curious how you Oregon hunters feel about applying out of state and getting 10 % of the tags as a Nonresident "BUT" in Oregon Non- Residents can only draw 2 1/2%. Of course this is my opinion but i think it's bull S---!!! I do agree that residents should get majority of the state tags and 10% is fair, but 2 1/2%?????

Coueswt...never really thought much about the non-resident issue. Other than the fact that there's frickin' hordes of non-residents who come to Oregon for the general season's. OTC and no limit!

Just curious, what controlled hunts do you apply for in Oregon?

treekiller,

I've been applying for sheep in Oregon and hope to draw someday(Dreamin). I been thinking about also applying for Blacktail and Antelope but know it takes Residents forever to draw these same tags as a resident. I'm sure the OTC and no limits ruins those area for game and then the non-residents(Probably from California)don't respect the land.

oldoregon...I live just east of Sandy toward Mt Hood.

cousewt...I've been applying for a bighorn tag since 1973! I figure if I keep whining and sniveling long enough, they'll get tired of me and give me a permit. Naa, I doubt it! LOL

I've drawn 2 antelope tags in the same time span, one in 1988, and the second in 2000.

Most of the Blacktail hunting is general season. They have a few controlled muzzleloader hunts during the rut. There's a late archery hunt in the rut also. But things are about to change from what I've been hearing. We have a disease called "hair loss syndrome" that raising havoc on the coast. Mountain lions are increasing with leaps and bounds, and a big decrease in logging on public lands have all caused our Blacktail herds to take a dive. There's still alot of nice bucks available, but not like it was just 10 years ago.
