Can anyone give me some good or bad points? I am thinking that I might want to try and hunt that area with my 12 and 14 yr. old boys for elk.

Beautiful country. Lots of elk in the early parts of the seasons. Can get snowed in in the late seasons. Lots of hunting pressure. Sould be a good time, but don't expect to see large-antlered elk.

Thanks alot for the input. I'll be just happy to see some antlered Bulls.

LOTS of orange up there. I wouldn't ever hunt there again. But I always hunted the 2nd rifle. Last time I went there were four of us...we backpacked in and hunted for 5 solid days...one of our guys saw one calf and one cow. It was like a camping trip, but with guns. I'll never go back.

A little followup to my previous post. Having once lived in the area of the Flat Tops I have spent a fair amount of time there camping, 4-wheeling, Sunday drives, even a little fishing. It is a very big area, so results will vary, but I often saw elk during these summer trips. I hunted on the Flat Tops only once. It was a first-season hunt (the first rifle that is elk only) and, as was already mentioned, there were a lot of hunters. However, I also saw a lot of elk.

Hunted this area several years and can pretty much echo the earlier comments and that is be prepared for lots of hunters to compete with if your planning on a first season rifle hunt. So if your looking for a nice quiet hunt unaffected by others this ain't the area.

The positive can be that at least for the first day if your in the right areas the elk will be there and on the run.
