Area G Wyoming Mule Deer

The game and fish show region G had a 32.14% draw odd's for non-resident deer last year. Yes that's the lowest percentage of all the regions but 32.14% is petty damn good odds when you are use to 2-5% odds as a resident hunter.

300win,

Not sure I follow you. You can hunt G, H, etc... as a resident w/o having to draw a thing. Trying to move to Wyoming just so I can have it as good! Throw in the fact that you can hunt elk every year up there and I'd be one happy camper!

My predictions for nonresident '04 G draw odds are around 18% regular and 35% for special-may be high. Anyone else want to guess what the changes are going to do to the odds?

I guess I'm lucky that I don't need to draw being a resident but I will still take my guess. I think the 18% on the regular draw is about right. However, considering the fact that they doubled the amount of tags as well as double the additional cost, I would think you would have at least a 50% chance on the special draw, but what do I know. It is a crap shoot this year until some hard stats come out. The one thing I know is that I am 100% ready for this snow to melt and to get out there again.

boomer,

I'm guessing the special draw odds aren't going to be as great as many would hope. Almost everyone I know put in special this year thinking the same thing. I also know that the outfitters in G were telling EVERYONE to put in for the special this year cause, "you'll draw for sure this year."

Perhaps we should put a special vs. regular post on here to see what other MM guys did.

Odds....I haven't talk to a single guy that didn't do the pricey fee for deer......I'm saying 40% on reg fee odds and 8-10% on special-pricey fee odds.......throw in the large amounts of outfitter clients in the 'G' areas and they all did pricey fee too so they can draw, think about those that drew the Gen. elk tag at the pricey fee and now the outfitter is giving them a 'great deal' if they draw deer too so they will all go for the pricey fee to insure they draw like they did on the elk tags. It is going to be way heavy on appl. in the pricey fee vs cheap-reg. fee......I'm thinking, throw in the bad winter they have and if they cut the tag amounts by 25% that really throws the draw odds off too, but then again I did cheap fee so I'm hopefull haha.

Could someone tell this dumb redneck from Mississippi the difference between the regular and special draw. I know the special is more expensive but does it give better odds? I hope not because I applied for the regular deer.

Theoretically, the special tag is suppose to give a guy a better chance to draw. However, in the past that hasn't always been the case, especially in region G. They use to put 20% of the tags in to the special draw and charge you an extra $100. This year they are putting 40% of the tags into the special draw and nailing you for an extra $200. Since this is the first year, you can only guess at what will happen, especially in regions like G. I'm sure there will be some unhappy campers if the odds on the special tag in G are lower than the regual tag.
Especially some of those guys from Minnesota, right TJ!!

Why is this area so popular? I applied as part of a group under the regular application. I didn't know anything about this area, only that my pals were going. I have gone mule deer hunting before up around Powell and Cody. Killed a nice 5x4. Nothing real big. Will area G be much different?

CAN BE A VERY RUGGED AND STEEP REGION IF YOU ARE PLANNING ON BACKPACKING INTO SOME HIDDEN BASIN THAT YOU WILL BE SHARING WITH ABOUT 20 HUNTERS PER BASIN.IT IS GETTING TOUGH TO GET AWAY FROM ALL THE HUNTING PRESSURE.IF IT SNOWS LATER IT CAN BE A GREAT LOWER COUNTRY HUNT BUT IT USUALLY DONT SNOW ENOUGH ANYMORE DURING THE SEASON TO MOVE THE MAJORITY OF THE DEER DOWN UNTIL AFTER THE SEASON CLOSES. VERY HARD TO FIND WATER UP REAL HIGH FOR THE HORSES IF YOU WILL BE USING THEM. BACKPACKERS USUALLY CAN ONLY STAY UP IN THE HIGH COUNTRY FOR ABOUT THREE DAYS BEFORE THEY GIVE UP ON FREEZE DRIED FOOD AND HIKING BACK DOWN TO FILTER WATER AND HAVING TO HIKE BACK UP TO SMALL CAMP AREA. THIS HUNT IS NOT FOR THE WEAK AND BE PREPARED FOR ANY TYPE OF WEATHER.BUT GOOD LUCK TO ALL THAT PUT IN FOR REG-G BECAUSE I PUT IN FOR H.
