It's crunch time, fellows. I "need" a new deer rifle and it's down to a battle between 2 guns, and every opinion counts!!! Bucks are out there, just waiting to die.

In this corner, weighing in at 7lbs 6oz, we have a used, excellent condition Browning BAR chambered in 30-06 equiped with a Leupold 3-9x32 Rifleman. Retail price of $889... at the local gunshop for $695 (I'd offer them $650 cash).

And in the other corner, the challenger, weighing in at 7lbs no oz, we have a brand new, Savage Arms Ultra 114U with the New accutriger design and choice of 30-06 or .270! I already have a great scope I can move over to this rifle. Retail price of $569... at the local gunshop for $509.

Okay, Ladies and gentlemen... place your bets, and LETS GET READY TO RRRRUUUUUUUUMMMMMMMMMMMMBBBBBBBBBLLLLLLLLLLLEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!

Which rifle will it be? Your advice makes all the difference!

The BAR is a good gun. i have one in 7mm and it works great. but i would personally buy the savage just because i dont think the automatic is as accurate as the bolt action. I recently bought a new remington 710 rifle and it awesome. not expensive either and that thing can drive nails. its only like 450 with a scope llast time i checked. its lightweight too. you can get it in 300 mag, 7mm, 30-06 and 270. i got the 30-06 but now im working a summer job and saving up for the 300 mag.

I would get the Savage and probably the .270 caliber..... Allen Taylor......

How can you guys go for a savage over a browning, there's no comparison, browning by far is a better gun period....I've had both and the savage was sold 1 month later......

Depends on where the Browning was made. If Japan then I'd go with the Savage. Savage can be good, just float the barrel and glass bed it, adjust the trigger and your ready. I hate the Brownings from Japan, nothing but problems.

Bolt action is better compaired to Auto in acturacy(sp?)and that is from gun writers over the years.

I have carried a friends BAR for him in field before and they are a lot heavier than a bolt action, are you sure about the weight of that BAR w/ scope?

It all boils down to what you really want and like.

Brian

The weight of both was without scope... as per the respective websites...

The Savage has the new Accutrigger, adjustable down to 2.5lb break - it's quite crisp - only trigger probs on these new Savages is a small amount of play AFTER the trigger's pulled. But the difference in accuracy from that would be about .25" at 100 yards - negligible. I don't know anything about glass bedding...

One prob w/ the Savage is it only carries 1 round in the chamber and 2 rounds in the internal mag. If it's a 7mm or 300wm it holds 1 round in the chamber and ONLY 1 round in the internal mag! Basically, it's either 2 or 3 shots before you have to reload depending on the caliber bullet.

The browning has a detachable Clip that holds 4 or 5 rounds.

I just found a better deal on the savage... New in box, $512 including tax! Only have to pay the $20 DROS... man that's tempting...

The BAR is a good gun, I would not get the Savage, if your going to get a bolt action get a Remington, Savage is junk!!!

Had a BAR in 7mm rem mag. Had to send the rifle back to the factory for repairs after a mild load caused major problems. The same load has worked well in two other bolt action 7mm's. Something about the gas operation of the BAR requires a certain amount of gas/pressure to operate correctly. It is much safer and simpler to stay with a bolt action. They are usually more accurate too.

Hey Phantom:

I have the 7MM BAR (and love it, incidentally...), but have never reloaded my own ammo. Lately however, I have decided to take-up reloading. I also have the 7MM in a Rem BDL,and I was hoping to find a load that would work well in both guns. Sounds like this is the exact scenario that you have had problems with. I'm now a little concerned about running my own ammo through my BAR. What kind of problems did the mild load cause?

I also own a Remington 7400 .308, and was hoping to reload rounds for that one as well. Anyone have experience with the 7400s?

Thanks,
S.

PS: Oh, and PS Ozstriker22. I would go with the BAR or a Remington.

So last night I get home and check my messages... A buddy of mine, who I haven't spoken with in about a year, purchased a new Weatherby .300 Short Mag on Sunday and asked if I wanted to buy his 8 year old Weatherby Mark V .300 win mag... beautiful walnut stock... muzzle break installed... scope... 1/2 box of ammo... new leather sling... for $500 cash...

Looks like I found my bolt action hunting rifle!!!

I'm glad I waited... I was going to pick up that Savage tonight after work!!!

Jesse

ozstricker22, I have the same weatherby 300 mag with a 3x9 leupold scope without the muzzlebreak in mint condition I am looking to sell if you know anyone else interested.....

I've got a friend who wants a .338, but I think after he sees the 300 win mag he might change his mind!!!

1. What is the exact model rifle you've got?
2. Which Leupold (VXII, VXIII, etc)?
3. Why are you selling it?
4. How much will you take for it?

Thanks,

Jesse.

I own a Browning 30-06 auto and couldn't be happier with it. I shot my mule deer last fall with a steady rest no wind at just over 460 yards. I killed another whitetail with a rest at just under 400 yards two years ago I one shot each and had witnesses for both I own a couple other rifles in bolt action and they are excellant rifles. One only shoots as well as one practices. I don't alot maybe acouple boxes ayear. I do only shoot two or three shots per practice. If you practice it really won't matter which rifle you choose.

P.S. My buddies won't get in a shooting contest with me either.

Whats probably most important is how the gun fits you and what you have confidence in. It doesn't hurt to know the trajectory of your rifle and ammo.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-25-04 AT 10:51AM (MST)[p]I to have a BAR in a 7mm rem, mag. Its not a bench rest rifle but it groups well enough to hunt with, around 2" at 100 yrds
on its worst day.
I dont want to bad moulth Savage but their not in the same leauge as Browning. especialy if we were comparing apples to apples. bolt action to bolt action.

PS. sounds like you scored on a great rifle.
