Shed Score Guess

LAST EDITED ON Mar-28-04 AT 02:19PM (MST)[p]Ok- some of you may remember the Big typical I posted this winter. Well, I have gotten lucky and found both his sheds. Now the time to guess his gross & net score has come again & like I mentioned last year, his main beams are not short as you can see. I know it's not much and you may not even care, but the winner gets an 8x10 picture of this buck on the 2003 winter range. One other thing this buck is 8 or 9 yrs old and we're almost certain he winter killed this year, sad but true.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-28-04 AT 04:24PM (MST)[p]200 Gross- 187 net typical.
An awesome buck that has quite a few deductions if a person is too picky with book score. -1 for G1, -7 for the stickers -5 minimum for side to side deducts.
Still a no brainer big boy.
Thanks for sharing.
Best,
Jerry

192 net 207 gross I see about 14"-15" deductions with the extra stickers and that might be a little high. Should Net in the 190's still.

Because you don't know the exact inside spread I will guess that each side will go around 90" each. Great buck, Steve

OT

I'LL GUESS AT 189 6/8" NET!!!

IS THIS SET OF BONE OFF A BUCK THAT YOU POSTED A PICTURE OF EARLIER???

THE ONLY bobcat GUESSING!!!

bobcatbess yes it is. Also just a hint, his inside spread will exceed his main beam length. So he will be using his longest main beam for his spread credit

Total gross, 193"-194" About what I thought he was in the original pics. If I saw him during a season I would have been able to tell you what he scored! Beautiful buck!

That's great that you found the sheds. It's a real shame that he died on the winter range. Was it old age, something else or you don't know? I would guess that he is 204 gross Non-typical and 188 net typical.

197 Gross

It would be easier to judge if you weren't changing outfits for every picture!

The old boy was breeding all the way up to the end of Dec. By that time he was looking pretty ruff. That combined with the high snow levels, made us think he would probably winter kill this year. We even added a corn feeder in the area to see if we could help him out, however he was one of the only bucks that would not use the feeder. I guess you can't teach an old buck new tricks! Well, I finally saw him again at the end of February, he was still packing, but he looked like he was wintering in 4 feet of snow. I wanted to intervene and stick another feeder closer to where he was, but knowing if I did the stress could finish him off. I decided just to sit back and let nature take its coarse. I watched him from an extreme distance for about a week, and then he disappeared for good. After the snow melted, I hiked into the area where he was and just as I started my hike I found a fairly large buck that had already shed and succumb to the elements. I am assuming this was him. Finally, as I made my way to the top of this canyon, I noticed a large piece of bone lodged in the top of some sage brush, not 100 yards from where I had last seen him several trips and countless hours later I found that other side, not 100 feet from where his other shed lay. I'm amazed I never found it before but with the thick oak and sage brush I can see how I missed it. Also my brother and his friend found what looks to be his 2002 sheds and he must have been sick in 2002 broken points everywhere the velvet on his main beam was not rubbed all the way and the horn weight was not even close to what his 1999 sheds were. What do you guys think? Is it possible for a mule deer to have a total bad year, then next year just look amazing?

First of all, congratulations! Man would I love to walk up on those bad boys laying in the brush! I'm going to throw out a guess of 206 3/8" gross and 196 1/8" net. Very cool sheds!

Sorry to hear that he won't be back next year.

Instead of "score guess", can we change this to a "best caption for photos" contest.

I'll start.

"After Justin was arrested for indecent exposure, his only request was to have his prize mule deer sheds with him for the mug shots. Being a hunter himself, the chief of police obliged Justin's request."

Anyone else?

Just joshin Justin!

I'll guess 214 net! Hell, as long as we are hitting them out of the park around here, I'll go for the tape measure homer.

Once again. Just joshin. Looks like a high 180s to low 190's netter to me depending on the size of the dude holding them.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-29-04 AT 03:46PM (MST)[p]lol buckspy...

Thats a great set congrats, too bad he may not have made it through the winter...

I'd guess him at about 187 net... nice buck

Congrats on the sheds, great buck,Go back and find the skull off of the dead buck that was in the area if it is him your sheds should match up and then you will know, thanks for the pics.......P Pennie

A great pair of sheds for sure but some measurements do not look right to me.
Guess I would have to see them to know for sure but then again once they get that good they are all keepers no matter score.
Not meant to stir the pot but my opinion.
Great sheds no matter how you add them up.
Best,
Jerry

OT, I have to admit that I actually did spend a couple minutes on this one. Did I nail the numbers right on? Oh man, I am good! ;-) If anyone needs me to guide them on their next premium limited entry tag just hollar. I'll see if I can fit you into my busy schedule. LOL! I'm a lucky bugger!

Thanks for posting up the sheds OT.

nice buck

i would say probably about 201 gross and 196 net typical.
depending on the inside spread which i figure about 22 inch inside spread

No disrespect intended, its just that I have always considered 40" of mass to be noticably massive and that deer does not appear to be that heavy. Its hard to judge by pictures and I have been wrong on many occassions before...
