I may have a chance to hunt MD in this unit this year. I have a general question. Is this a good unit for deer and if so what are the general areas that I should look at?

I'm not looking for a honey hole just general info.

Thanks in advance and happy hunting. Darran

BCH,

Unit 62 is one of the more crowded areas to hunt in Colorado. It has miles of ATV trails, both official and feral. That being said it does have a good population of deer and they can be had if you head into one of the many rough and steep side canyons where the average Joe doesn't tread. Get down in the oakbrush, mountain mahogony, and other thick brush instead of the conifer/aspen forest area. I don't hunt it for deer or elk but I do hunt turkey there and since it is only a 45 minute drive I do end up spending a bit of time there.

Beanman hit the nail on the head. Lots of roads but it is possible to get away from hunting pressure. Try looking at Escalante Canyon, Barkley Cabin Gulch and the northern drainages leading up to Kelso Mesa. Further to the east, Monitor Mesa is an area with a few isolated canyons. Bucks on the Plateau get pretty spooky by muzz season. I have seen several nice bucks during the first few weeks of September but they dissapear fast when the guns and orange start showing up. Make sure you have a good pair of boots, you'll need them. Good luck ! :)

Hey unit 62 sucks. I hunt there and never see big deer.I just hunt for meat so I hunt some fields down low.I havent seen a deer over the 140 class in 5 years in this unit. You could do better in any other unit in the state than this one.Try the bookcliffs north of Grand Junction there are monsters in there if you can find them. There are so many hunters in unit 62 it will piss you off. You would be better off trying to hunt the northwest part of the state also there are better deer up there too.
