LAST EDITED ON Apr-18-04 AT 08:28PM (MST)[p]Okay Guys!
Let use this FORUM for what it was meant for "helping hunter and entertianing".
Before I spend $400/$500 on gas(BAYAREA,CA) on a road trip scouting the
SOUTHERN GEN AREA(RIFLE) I need some help finding a "starter point".
(start to scout for bucks, camp area, trailer parking).
Needs to be public, or a reasonable access fee!
I have some help from uncles that have hunted it, however they'er
not as sharp as when I was young(did not know I should have taken notes,LOL). Some areas that were mentioned was-ENTERPRISE,
(southwest of). Pine Valley- PILOT PEAK,FLAT TOP MOUNTIAN,POLEHOLLOW,COTTONWOOD CREEK,LITTLE VALLEY!
Others say FISHLAKES area! Just want to be on the right foot!
As all public area hunting pressure suck! I been lucky with outta state draws but last 2 years been wanting to hunt the southern state of Utah GEN deer to see how I do! I hunted the pauns in 2000 and loved it! Saw great deer all over the south then, so here I am! going up end of May 4 or 5 days,do these areas have promise? my uncles hunted back in 60's-70's when they
lived in FLAGSTAFF,AZ(THEY DID VERY WELL!).
INFO IS RUSTY AT BEST!
ANY INFO WILL BE VERY HELPFUL!
THANK'S JACK

thanks! I saw them mountians when I hunted the pauns and wondered
how they did there?

I was talking to an area biologist tonight who was telling me about his annual deer count. Says he has talked to a couple of other biologists around the southern part of the state and he says this is going to be a tough year for deer. Said most of the units were under management plan numbers. We are in the south central part of the state. From what few bucks we have seen during the fall and winter, I have to agree with him. I think there are still some good areas, but a guy will have to hunt hard to find them. Good luck on your search!

Remember: A bad day hunting is better than a Good Day at Work!!

Antlerrick!
I heard the Zion unit is a wash!(no fawns to carry over for a few years). But that the Pine Valley unit would be better(better buck to does ratios).(bio guy just return my call)this guy said it was a good winter and expect an avg year with bigger bucks taken in the better areas.

Fishlake National forests surround me, & I am not aware of any access fees that are offered around here, mainly because there is not much private ground, plus the few larger tracts that are private, bring in there own CWMU hunters. I'm guessing if you were to call the Cedar City DWR office biologist, he would tell you most of the Fishlake areas have good deer numbers, with fewer mature bucks.
If your hunting archery, hunt higher altitudes, by rifle season most have dug in up high, so try lower. My advise is save the money you would have spent on access fees & come out & scout around & see what kind of terrain suits you, since there is so much diversity in the types of terrain you can hunt.

Send me an E-mail and we can get together and scout. It depends on what size deer you are looking for and how hard you are willing to work for it. I live in the Richfield area and would be willing to show a fellow MM member around a little.
