Deer States

This might strike up so controversy but I'm curious what you you guys think is the most overrated mule deer stae(s) and the most underrated mule deer state(s). WHY?

RE: Deer States

not sure on the overrated state is but I would say Washington is the most underrated state for mule deer hunting. There are a lot people hunting, almost no nonresident hunters but there is good hunting if you know were to go. I see some big deer every year.

RE: Deer States

I live in Utah. Love the state, however, I think it would fall in your overrated category. I have hunted for 20 years. Right now deer numbers are the lowest I have ever seen. The deer have really struggled and never really recovered since the winter of 92-93. Wildlife officials keep saying it will never return to the way it used to be. Last estimates put the deer herd at around 280,000 to 300,000. I still love it here and will continue to hunt.

RE: Deer States

I'm with Craig on this one. Just wait, in the next couple of years we will be seeing nore and more world class mulie bucks come from this state. I hunt the late archery whitetail hunt in Ferry County and see some absolute monster mulie bucks during the rut. No one gets them because they are now living where the whities are, in the brush choked draws.

RE: Deer States

Will you apple-eating Washingtonians lay off the weed?
Bunch of home state cheerleaders. Your worse than that maple leaf flag waving Canadian, BCBOY.

RE: Deer States

Most underated: Utah
Most over rated: CO (Not a challenge at all. Too many Big Bucks running around that any Joe Blow that can hit the side of a barn can kill a monster)

RE: Deer States

Hey BCBOY-I heard the Vancouver Canucks are all out golfing today thanks to Bertuzzi's WWF move last month. hehehe

Sincerely,

Killer of Broadsides of Barns (and pretty good bucks too)

RE: Deer States

Where do you think British Columbia gets all their big mule deer from. All the big bucks from Washington smell that maple syrup and start heading north and then the Canadians say they have big bucks all over. Quit baiting our deer and I will give you a address so you can send all the mule deer sheds back to their proper owner in Washington.

RE: Deer States

I sure don't profess to be an expert, but I'd agree that Utah is the most overrated. The most underrated would have to be the Canadian provinces from BC to Sask. Too bad we can't hunt there without a guide, otherwise all us U.S die-hard muley hunters would go there and decrease their big buck population a bit. Then they'd be like us and wish for the good old days.

RE: Deer States

BS
Didn't I predict a while back that the Canucks would be out? They are classic choke artists. I was kinda thinking Calgary would have swept them in 4 but what do I know, I ain't a hockey fan. LOL! I haven't been paying attention, how have the Avalanche been doing as of late? Being a diehard Canadian Flag Waver I'll say it's going to be a Toronto/Montreal Final this year. Now that would be some hockey worth watching eh?

RE: Deer States

Craig, and Polarbear are right, Washington is a very underated state, not many nonresidents hunt here which is a good thing. I have hunted Montana Idaho and Oregon, and have seen bigger bucks in washington than anywhere else so far, not to say that we have the biggest bucks around but there are a few here in our great state.

RE: Deer States

BCBoy.You are not a true Canadian, must be some sort of a fraud?.How the hell could the Habs and Leafs play in a final? they are both in the east! Best in the east plays best in the west buddy,Better stick to your shed hunting.

RE: Deer States

I'm not from there but I think that idaho is the most underrated state out there. Too many big bucks come out of there every year while states like Colorado and Wyoming get all the hype. I think those states deserve the hype they get but at the same time Idaho gets overlooked. Watch out for Eastern Oregon as well.

RE: Deer States

Quite talking about Washington, lets let people think there are no big deer here. We'll keep that secret to those of us who still hunt here. I would say that BC is the most underrated place, Utah the most overrated.

RE: Deer States

Ooops, you are right Ridgerunner. I meant to say California was the most under rated mulie state. Yeah, thats the ticket. Washington has only dink deer and elk and not very many at that.
Eric

RE: Deer States

RE: Deer States

With the bucks over 300" in Kalifornicated, I'd say it is underated. When you come to the left coast we open our arms out to you. Welcome to the leading state where multiculturlism is our number one import. Remember to bring your excess baggage and any skeletons that hang in your closet. We have a welfare program for you and your needs. Is your wallet a little on the light side? How about your health? Possibly an ingrown toe nail? Need a car to look for work? How about an education for FREE? Want to vote? Vote liberal and we will bus you to your polling grounds. You can thank a tax paying conservative for the free ride. We even deliver babies for free. And ofcourse we provide your daily bread and junk food to make you happy. Don't worry about your self esteem for big brother will be throwing more dinero at you in the very near future.

RE: Deer States

How many bucks has Washington produced over gross 220 in the last 4-5 years? I'd be willing to bet a paycheck that Colorado produced more this year than Washington produced in the last decade and possibly in the last 20 years. Of course thats believable because Colorado has more genetic potential and better habitat to produce huge bucks. I wouldn't be stupid enough to say there aren't any real nice bucks running around Washington, but I'd just have to say your comparing apples and hawgs. (pun) I think its great that guys are enthusiastic about the potential for Washington to produce some good bucks. Lets see 'um after you come back to planet earth! (joke)

RE: Deer States

LAST EDITED ON Apr-22-04 AT 11:29PM (MST)[p]Idaho, you must be joking! Was there a great buck shot in Idaho this last year? How many over 220 gross, How many typicals over 190 gross? We need to get rid of some of these wolves!!!! And some of the forked horn hunts!!!

RE: Deer States

Lowlandmulies,
I'll agree with you that the deer hunting in Idaho isn't very good and everyone should go somewhere else. Something needs to be done about the wolves as well. In a few years there will be many Idaho grown wolves moving into Utah, Nevada, Oregon and Washington. Hope you guys enjoy them as much as we have.

I'll disagree with you about the fork horn hunts because what we really need to do is restrict are the ways hunters use ATVs. I'm guessing that 2 point hunts you're talking about are the SW corner of the state. I think doing away with the 2pt hunt and November controlled hunt and just making it a controlled hunt in October with the new ATV restrictions would be the best option.

So you don't disagree with me on the forked horn hunts? We do need to eliminate them and make it a controlled hunt. I thought that is where I was going with it. Maybe i wasn't clear, my bad.

ATV's are a problem, kind of!?!? I point the finger at the people using them. Not everybody is a bad apple. But we all are going to have to pay the price. I don't mind the restrictions, inforcement of the law might be a tough one though

RE: Deer States

From 2001-2002, bowhunters entered 69 mule deer into the Pope & Young record book from Utah, second only to Colorado's total of 76. In the all-time P&Y records, a total of 501 Utah muleys have been entered, again, second only to Colorado's total of 805.
