Has anyone hunted unit 52, for mule deer? they have a new muzzleloader hunt this year. 52-2 east of highway 75. What type of country is it and what kind of quality bucks?

I drew 52 rifle last year. The portion of 52 they are going to
let you hunt is the crap part of the unit. It is very flat with
not much cover. I hunted on that side some and found so few deer
it was not even looking over there. the other side of the highway had alot better country and way more deer in it. there might but a couple of good bucks in it but to get one with old style of patch and ball smokepole would be a extreme. If you do not mind going days without seeing a deer but might see a big one then this is the hunt for you.

Wow! You guys have very different opinions! Aaron, I don't think the new traditional rules say anything about old style patch ? Kicker, have you been on the east side of hwy 75? Todd

The traditional rules for that area arn't new and can be found in last years regs.
In addition to the "Muzzleloader-Only" rules you are only allowed use a rifle or musket with an exposed hammer that pivots, loose black powder or Pyrodex and last but not least, loaded only a patched round ball projectile.

From what I have been told the reason that hunt was moved and changed to traditional is because in recent seasons there have been too many bucks killed in this part of the state and the department thinks that the traditional guys would be more willing to shoot does than other groups of shooters. I don't know if that is true or not but that might explain why they divided the unit in half and put the hunt on the smaller side with fewer deer.
It is also my understanding that this hunt will be moved to a new unit each year, I guess wherever F&G wants to put couple hundred extra hunters...is how this hunt is gonna work.
