West TX Mulie

Well boys, I finally figured this photobucket thing out! I have been having hell posting anything lately. Anyway, since this site is about big mulies, I figured I'd post my biggest mulie to date. I took this buck on the barren, lunar landscape at Balmorea, TX on the north side of I-10 last year. This ranch is huge, but there are very few deer in this particular area. He was so old that his back teeth were gone. I showed him to a biologist and he guessimated his age at 8 1/2 plus.
Was probably a monster a few years back. G-2's were 17" and 16 1/2". He netted 150" even. Not huge, but a good buck for that part of the country. Now, the other critter is a West TX grizzly!! On the ranch there is a planted field of wheat that the mulies love to come to, and also a few hogs. I took this monster the evening before I took the buck. We hauled him back to San Angelo, gutted, and put him on a cotton gin certified scale. He was 374lbs. That would have put him at around 430- 440lb. live weight. Biggest one I've ever put down!! Hope you enjoy,
Scottyboy

NICE
Good to see some Texas pics. I bet that buck was older than that.
Did the hog have good tusks?

"We must HUNT"

Nice buck, and that is a monster hog. That's funny, Texas Grizz. Great pics thanks for posting.

Great pictures.......that is a monster hog and real nice buck for the area............ Allen Taylor......

Nice animals Scotty.....are those fat hogs good eatin'? I mean is it like "normal" pig or is it a little gamey?

Nice pics scottyboy - I didn't realize the hogs have gotten that far west. We have some ranches near Sweetwater and we're covered up in hogs - I killed 44 just last year, more than 200 in the last 6 years - we can't get rid of 'em. I have about 200 sections leased up in the sandhills west of Odessa for muleys and the wild hogs have just moved into that country also. Muleyslyr, we've butchered wild pigs from 20 lbs to 400 lbs and they all taste great - no gamey taste whatsoever - maybe even better than store bought. The best part about the pigs is you can hunt them year-round - it's a blast unless you get on a rattlesnake!

LAST EDITED ON Apr-28-04 AT 01:11AM (MST)[p]Thanks guys for all the posts. Just got home from a double shift out in the field. In my job, I get to "hunt" all day everyday. I am a US Border Patrol Agent now stationed here in Tucson for the next few years till I transfer back to TX. I caught a group of 25 this evening right before shift change, and 2 of the turds ended up being prior deports. That means a LOT of paperwork and BS. Anyway, hunttx, to answer your question,I did'nt beleive my buddy when he said he had some hogs on the property that far west. But there are plenty of them out there now. The field that I shot this one out of was torn up from all the pigs. Also, there was 5 others that I saw that evening.
I don't know how this pig was on the grill cuz I gave it to a coworker who had it processed. The other question was if he had big tusks or not. Not really. I've killed way smaller pigs with bigger teeth. Someone once told me this, and I don't know if it's true or not, but if a pig is really eating well, than his teeth never have the chance to grow very long because he is constantly wearing them down. Like I said, I was only told that.
Again, thanks for all the posts,
Scottyboy

Oh yeah, Hey sotx,
