Any one have info on this unit willing to share? Still looking for an elk hunt since I did not draw any tags. Thanks. Mike

I like it, it a great archery hunt,I'm fixing to find out how a rifle hunt goes I drew a rifle tag this year.

Gator,
Hunted first rifle in 5B last year, we were in elk everyday. Should be a awsome hunt if you do some scouting, has been a great year with tons of moisture this past winter, all tanks are holding water... Good luck

One of our drivers here hunts 5B. He and his dad love it, the first rifle hunt he said the bulls are still bugling. In 2003 they walked up on two bulls locked up gettin after it, they both killed the bulls and have the pics of the bulls by each other . Last year he said the elk were very scattered but thats expected in wet years and only he killed an elk. Mesa Gurule , it's a pretty good area , it is a bit steep to drop down but alot of hunters stay on the road to drive to the end of Mesa del Camino, which can also be good , but you still have to drop off to the north west side. On the other side of the river theres an area called Mesa De Las Viejas. It's mainly pinion/juniper country , but it also has elk scattered throughout the whole area. It's a great place to see big muleys and has very much the quality bucks as the 2'S just not as many , but gettin better. This area has some private land to the north and many elk pass back and forth but alot of the more local hunters stay close to that area. It's still an area that gets a bit of poaching up in there , so hopefully the G&F will be able to give this area some more attention. All in all that first rifle hunt should be pretty good. One bit of advice , if you guys choose to go into Mesa De Las Viejas , just pay attention to the weather. If it getts wet , it's a real bad mucky area, the clay/mud just packs tires BAD...

One more thing , theres alot of wood cutting in this unit , so if you get a chance to come in early to scout , try talking to the wood cutters , most are local and will tell what they see...

That pretty much what I was thinking because the bulls was just getting started bugling at the end of the archery season the last few years, so I think they should be talking a little still during the rifle hunt, We like the area alot during the bow season we was in elk every day and saw some really nice ones. The WET part isn't a lie never seen so many ditches, LOL you slip from the high side to low side no matter what you do, we carried chains but haven't used them yet maybe this year we will have to chain up. Haven't decide if we are taking horses or the Jeep & Quad. But it should be a good time no matter which way it goes.

I drove into that area during the rain a few years back and passed two trucks that had slipped into the ditches during archery season. It does get treacherous...I've gotten into more elk in the Gila and a northern unit I've hunted a couple of times but I still enjoyed the 5b hunt.

That road was just a tad slippery wasn't it after that rain, but hey it did fill up the tanks( our bad luck) but we did find the bulls.
