LAST EDITED ON May-18-04 AT 10:44AM (MST)[p]this morning on the way to work a lady hit a big doe on the freeway. so i stoped and asked if she wanted any help, her car was in pretty bad shape. the hole front end was gone it poped the hood up totaled the front end completley. so i went over to check out the deer and she was still alive! so we called the cops told them what had happened, told them that the deer was still alive it took the cops over 20 minutes to respond. i was rather mad by this time told the cop that that was bull that they waited that long. he then said that the deer would more than likeley stay there. i told him to call the fish and game and have them come and pick up the deer and take it to the homeless shelter or something no sense having the deer sit there in the road rotting by the sun. he then said he would have dispatch call the dwr and tell them but he said more than likeley they will not do anything. but if i want it or know anybody that wants it they will issue a tag for it. pretty sad just another example how the utah dwr does not care much for there deer. by the way what would you notch out on the tag 1-15 1-84 what intersection, ect? pretty disapointing that the dwr will just assume let it sit there and rot than to take it and feed the hungry......

I for one am very glad the DWR did not send out a tax paid public employee to dispatch, gut and process a road killed deer. Then haul it down to the homless shelter to feed some bums that are to dam lazy to get a job and feed their selves.
Good hell for buy sicks is the DWR supposed to take care of every road killed animal in the state????

Life is tough all over. I've been hit with bad luck before. I didnt roll over and blame society. I picked it up and busted some ass and dug my self out.
As for the deer. Well I dont like to see one suffer but there are children suffering worse fates than that. Why arent you running to thier defense????
Buy Buy For Buy Sicks.........

well mabye if they took the deer to a place were they can use the meat than that would be a good thing! and dont talk like that like you are better than everybody else that makes me sick. almost as sick as watching that doe suffer!!!!

Nunya,
congrats on salvaging your life, now we can all gain from your insight. On the other hand, maybe you shouldn't be talkin ##### about those "lazy bums" at the shelter--quite a few of them are vet's that put their "worthless lives" on the line so you can enjoy the freedoms you have today and that's why they are in there current state of mind--given that any thought? I commend 4X6 for thinking of ways to turn a negative into a possitive, you're a good man.

Where I am from, there are volunteers on a list that will drop everything and come process the deer. They then give the meat to a local indian tribe. For this labor, the tribe won't drive out into the winter range to "poach" trophy bucks to "feed" their tribe, exercising their treaty rights as they see them. Thats a whole other issue. Special thanks to the sportsmen for helping out.

Whatever.... Those people are there because of thier decision to live that way. Give me a break. You can find a job any where if you want one and are WILLING to work. That includes disabled persons....Maybe you and 4x6 should spend your weekends rustling up road kill for the salvation army.....

Do you really think that people DECIDE to be disabled and homeless? Sounds like your not too far away from the soup line yourself you brain dead #####.

Over 70% of the homeless population suffers from some sort of mental illness. Nothing to do with being lazy when your not right in the head. Soften up there a bit NUNYA.

Sure fun to see a lively debate going on around here,
My 2 Cents on the homeless, there are a lot of mentally ill SOB's that in the old days, we would be paying their expense's to be housed in the state hospital, however there are just as many that find it easier to go to the soup kitchen & lay around in pioneer park, then take on the pressures associated from making a living on their own.

Ok heres what the udwr does. 2 years ago a dump truck cliped the ass end of a young bull moose. I happened to be behind this dump truck. I stopped and helped the guy out and went and checked on the moose to my surprise he was still alive but he was crippled. UHP then asked me if I could dispose of this animal in a way that wouldnt waste it. I told him i aint doin nothin until DWR gives me approval to do so. so the UHP trooper gets on the radio gets a hold of an on duty DWR officer who says go ahead and take it/ put it down I ended up having the UHP trooper put it down and i took care of the rest. The bull did not go to waste and he wasnt bruised at all. I donated half of the meet as i couldnt eat a whole moose but the fact of it is DWR wont come to a crash involving an animal but will give you what they call a Donation Tag which is really a piece of paper that has all your info on it with no tag attached.

When I worked for the Idaho Fish and Game several times we had people want us to take care of animals that had been hit by cars. One guy wanted us to hand raise a whitetail fawn that had lost its mother to a car, and one lady even brought in a robin that had flow into her window and broke its neck and asked if we could rehabilitate it. If a state game and fish agency responded to every accident and rehabilitated evey broken neck robin they would use a lot of their man hours and budget working on such a small portion of the population. The situation described in the inital post is definetely too bad, but you have to look at the big picture. I don't see this incident as an example of how the DWR doesn't care about the deer. Insead of trying to be retroactive and save hit deer, maybe the DWR should do more about preventing deer vehicle collisions in the future with some new overpass/underpass structures and more signage in areas with high deer use.

4x6- Why didn't you get the donation tag and take care of the animal yourself, rather than leaving it to rot?? You are pawning off the responsibility to someone else.

Gotta love the DWR bashers out there. The DWR stinks, while these guys that post are flawless. 4x6 even kills the "biggest buck of his life", then shoots another mature buck this year, but the DWR is always wrong. He sounds like a Democrat.

4x6;

"So we called the cops, took them over 20 minutes to get there,I was rather mad by this time and told the cop that was bull that they took so long". 4x6 I was a cop for 29 years and I am glad that I do not have to deal anymore with A-holes like you. Dispatching wild game animals is not a call that has high priorty with law enforcement, and you were lucky that a cop even showed up to the call, if he had any other calls pending involving humans or their property, it will be given priorty over your call.
Do us all a favor, and go back to bed and try to wake up another day without PMS.
RELH

4X6,

Even though RELH touched on this....i figured I'd add my two cents. As a Law Enforcement officer here in the great state of Utah....i'll tell you that the priority level on a deer vs. car is near the bottom. Im sorry, but some lady getting her face punched in by her husband has a bit more precedence. 20 minutes?? You were complaining about a 20 minute response time..ha ha ha ha ha. There are times where a call will hold for a few hours before we get to it. Too many calls, too few officers. THe next thing is, If i get dispatched to a deer vs. car, and the deer is still alive, I still have to get the DWR's permission before I can put it down....even as a cop, I still need their permission....so as far as Im concerned, I wish people would just call the DWR so I wouldnt have to go on these types of calls anymore.

Complaining about the cops.....another wonderful thankyou from the people we serve and protect. You wouldnt happen to be the same guy who calls in on me each time I speed on my way to an important call??

TUFF

Man, NUNYA kinda? sounds like Hitler to me. So in your eyes should we just kill the poor and disabled? What an A$$! What's you annul income? Oh, more then mine, does that make you better then me, am I lazy? You make yourself sound like a cocky rich bastard. To the cops, giving speeding tickets to people or writing parking tickets is more important then getting some fresh deer to some hungry kids? That's all I see our ?protectors? do around here. They really serve me, ha. I bet you speed past people on the way to important call, I see cops do that all the time. ?Oh, $hit, red light, better flash my lights to get threw it.? Give me a break. How many people call you in life or death situation ?officer a guy is holding a gun to my head? ?Ok ill be their in about 20.? Lets all throw a fit about a guy tying to help out and feed some people. 4X6 is right, and all you Nazi?s must be rich republicans pooping on the little guy. You all make me sick!

"When the police get to my house faster then a bullet leaves my barrel, then they can have my guns."

I'm not getting into the homeless debate or the conservative/liberal side of this but dammit, 20 minutes seems like a pretty fast response time to me for an officer to get to a call?

I agree there are more important things for police to do.

One time in Iowa my buddy and I were driving and stopped in the middle of a small bridge where two button bucks stood frozen in our headlights. One freaked out and jumped over the rail, breaking it's neck. We did not put it down with an arrow. We knew to call the DNR for a salvage tag, not the police, but it was 8 PM. We drove into town and asked a police officer and he said no problem. Since the DNR office was closed he would issue us a tag which he had in his squad car. They did not want to drive out to the boonies and we did not expect them to. But we did feel obligated to save the meat, which we did.

This is all resolved if you just carry a 9 under the seat. Bust some caps!
Then there was the time that I watched an old lady about 90 years old smack a deer. I checked on her then the deer. The deer was still alive, and I didn't have as much as a knife in the truck. I tackled the deer and got her in a headlock and busted her neck. Can you imagine what oncoming traffic thought when their headlights saw me in shirt and tie with a deer in a headlocke. Thought I'd lighten this up a bit. True story though.

LOL....unbelievable that on a "Mule Deer" forum we can argue till our fingertips are blue about the roadkill, police responsiblities, annual incomes, homeless people.... Come on' sounds to me the guy was just trying to save a deer! And if not at least not let it go to waste. Next thing you know the guys ahole, wow. So much for "IMO"

By the way, Boneaddict are you sure you didn't have the old lady in a headlock? LOL.

Hey boneaddict, did you get a good samaritan award? Sounds to me like you deserve one! Great story it really did lighten this post up a bit.

4X6,
What type of officer showed up, County, City, State? Did you ever think that maybe Box Elder County doesn't have a whole lot of police officers to respond to your call at that time of the morning? Maybe you should have just told them who it was, I am sure they would have dropped everything for you. After all the crap you have talked about the men and blue and pretty much everyone else on this board, I hope you never find yourself in need of any help. I'm sure a bunch of guys on this board wouldn't piss on you if you were on fire!

Rut

Seems to me the guy was just trying to help out and the cops and others jumped up his butt. They are cops, and when something does not get done they find a way to justify their absence. I just hope I am not dieing in a major car wreck while they are to busy eating donuts to help out. "Sorry you died man, I was written' a parking ticket." Come on, we are talking about feeding the hungry, not pissen? on cops.
Michael

4x6 i hope sometime you are on the road and your car flipped and the officer won't come because he is taking care of a sick deer.

for buy sicks, they told YOU that YOU could get a possesion permit. Why then if you are so concerned did you not take care of the deer YOURSELF?!?!?!?! Instead of getting bent because someone else didnt do it for you. Really your no better than them. YOU also left the deer. Then you get on MM to vent your DWR frustration.

Amen!!! 4x6 reminds me of the loud mouth in the cheap seats at a Jazz game who thinks the refs missed a call. He's up 2000 ft and tell the ref that he's blind.

your quite a gentleman man....pluralizing all people into groups and slamming law enforcement over the internet is quite respectfull..it shows intelligence and decorum. the etiquette I have seen in this post is atrocious, disgusting, foul, horrid, nasty, nauseating, offensive, repellent, repulsive, revolting, ugly, and vile.

DWR better open a hunt fast!

Are you folks always this ornery or just during the off-season? Been reading through some of the threads on this site and there always seems to be either a "pissin" constest brewing or the (highly probable) potential for one. Almost like a group of bullies finding someone more intelligent than they are then pouncing in for the kill.

Seems as though a person puts their nerves on the line by posting anything of interest.

How many people that have posted on this topic would have used their deer tag and took this doe if they were in the same situation? I can't say I would have. Give the guy a break. At least he stoped and tried to help.

It is not the action that everyone is upset about it is the way he feels the need to slam everyone else involved (the cops and the F&G). I'm glad he felt the impulse to find a use for the deer, but he doesn't need to bash others, just say what you need to say and leave it at that.

Rut

If nobody else is going to say it, I'am, Martinhunter, shut the hell up. Nothing Nunya said makes him a nazi, and I missed the part where he says kill the poor and disabled. Your comment about you having a gun pointed at your head and a cop taking 20 mins. to respond, thats exactly what they're saying, somebody with a gun pointed at their head is more important then a deer hit by a car. You make no sense. Are you friends with Cass?
