Idaho 20A and 26

I inadvertantly entered the wrong number for my ID controlled hunt for deer and got one of the unlimited late season deer tags for Unit 26. My hunting partner and I were talking about it and since we didn't get drawn for MT decided we'd give ID a try for Elk and deer since it's a shorter drive for us since we live in WA. He then bought a general season deer tag for this area. Our thinking is that we can go for a week or so early and he can hunt for deer while we scout the area for Elk and while we are Elk hunting we can be scouting for a bigger buck for the late season.

Neither one of us has been to this area but we've been looking at maps to try and get a feel for the land and find some spots that look like they would hold animals. It appears to be very steep and rugged with limited roads. We don't have horses and are to frugal (if we could afford it) to go with an outfitter.

I'm not looking for anyones secret spot but would appreciate some input in the area, things I can't see from the map. Is it heavy timber or pretty much like SW MT which has timber mixed in with sage brush? Are there a lot of animals in the area or do you have to pack in to have a chance at getting a Elk? Would a spotting scope be useful in the area or is there not much to see? What about weather, I've checked the weather archives and it seems pretty mild with the average lows in the 30's and the highs in the 50's. I know that weather can change quickly and we'd be prepared for it but we're just wondering what to expect.

Any input is appreciated,

Thanks,

Bill
