Elk in Area 65, Idaho

I will be hunting elk in area 65 this fall, but I will be on the other side of the world until about the end of September, so I won't have much of a chance to scout it out. I've done about as much research on this area as a guy can do (Aerial graphics, F&G stats, internet sources). My focus is on the Big Hole Mountains section of the area and I have some questions I have been unable to answer despite my research. Does this area have any decent backcountry accessible only by horse or foot? Would it be considered mainly a thoroughfare for migrating elk, or does it hold some decent resident game? I've seen this place from Ryan Peak and Hwy 33; everything but set foot in this locale. Any help would be appreciated.

There are elk in the Big Holes but the area has some issues, in my opinion. I've never hunted elk in the unit, but live here in Teton Valley and I moose hunted here (65) last year. The Big Holes are pretty rugged and very brushy, however, most trails get ATV or cycle usage - "decent backcountry" is in short supply. Nevertheless, there are elk there. Sounds like you'll be hunting the rifle season, so expect company, especially during the bulls only hunt. I don't know how to send private emails but maybe you do. If you send me a your email address I'll email you back and tell you what I know.

Thanks for the reply. I'll see if I can get the private message thing worked out. Just haven't tried it, yet. I applied for the moose in 65 this year, but didn't get it. A lot of nice moose in that area.
