Muleys Responding to a grunt

I read a real interesting article the other day at work, a man was hunting the eastern plains of Colorado I believe and came aross a 150 class Whitetail. He stalked it over the plains for 2 straight days. The guide said he would be insane to pass on a buck like this with his bow. Anyways, they were tracking to whitetail and came across a Booner of a muley. 180+. Real Nice buck. The guide set him up on a stalk and when he got to within 45 yards he spooked one of the does and the buck darted off. He just started grunting and brought the muley back in to 37 yards and arrowed it. Now i've seen over the years, people ask on here if muleys responded to grunts during the rut. Personally I have never heard a muley grunt, i've seen the do some other stuff that whitetails don't but never a grunt. Just thought this might be some unseful info incase somone has a question about it.

I've heard deer using what sounds like a high pitched whistle, not like an elk, but a soft high pitched wistle. I've yet to hear one grunt but have always thought that they probably do.

I haven't called any in, but last year in North Dakota I heard one make the strangest grunt during a December bowhunt. It was a very loud growl. Thought at first some wild beast had snuck up behind me, but then I saw the buck tending a doe on a hillside 200 yards away. He made the growl at her again and it sounded like he was right next to me. He also made a few soft grunts, but that growl is something I've never heard mentioned before. Really neat to see and hear.

A couple of years ago some friends of mine were hunting an old burn with waist high grass. They sat down to rest and one of them was fooling arouhd with a grunt call. After a couple of small grunts, in came a 32 1/2 inch 5x5. They probably would have walked right by him in that tall grass if not for the grunt. Another time a friend of mine and I brought in a small 4x4 to about 30 yds with a grunt call. Both times were at the beginning of the rut. Don't know if it works all the time, but apparently on some bucks it will. mtmuley

I have a copy of a Primos calling video for varmints and they actually showed how one of their fawn calls sure did bring deer running, mostly does though. I think a grunt call would mostly work to stop a walking muley. I am not sure if they would actually come looking for you.

A fawn bleat for mule deer will bring them running, its awesome. A friend of mine videotaped himself doing this down in Sonora a few years back and the results were pretty amazing.

I have grunted in countless bucks out of season. It's amazing to see there demeanor instantly change. I was grunting at a herd of bucks (about 5) forky to a nice 5x5. As i started grunting the less dominate bucks perked up and instantly started my way. The three bigger bucks though, laid there ears back and started my way on a mission. Before they could get to me a truck came blasing up the hill and spooked them all off. Tried that same thing several times since then and it always has a similiar affect. Even if they don't come in, they will definately stop.

THE DEER STOPPER CALL MADE BY EASTMANS,HAS HELPED ME IN HARVESTING 3 BLACKTAILS,AND 4 MULIES,I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT.

I've grunted in many mule deer bucks ... usually in combination with a doe bleat.

Works great and I wouldn't hesitate to have it in your bag of tricks for big mule deer bucks.
