Walkers Game ear............Opinions please

OK fellas, I actually have a serious question about a product I've been considering purchasing and am looking for some opinions from those of you who own or may have tried them.

I took up shooting and hunting in the early 60s, long before anyone wore hearing protection (or long before I knew of permanent damage to the ear). I also have an inherent genetic hearing defecit in both ears, approx. 1/2 deaf in one ear. I can't hear quail calling anything like I used to hear em call. And I don't know what sounds I'm missing on a deer/elk hunt either and have a heck of a time listening to anyone whispering in the field. The last couple years it's just been driving me bonkers.

So what I've been considering is the Walker game ear, but know nothing about it other than their ads. Does anyone use the Game ear I or II and do you recommend it to folks like me who have hearing deficiencies? Appreciate any and all opinions (except of course the anticipasted smart arse ones from Deerking &/or Cooter :). Thanks, Free

I am patiently waiting for responses, I've got the same problem and mine have been ringing for 25 years.

They work very good. I think it's defiantely worth the investment. I used mine for the first time out coyote hunting a few weeks ago and it was unreal how well I could hear. Blue jays that I honestly couldn't hear because they were to far off sounded like they were in the tree in front of me. Very good investment!!

Forgot, I also have hearing loss in my left ear from to many firearms going off and no ear protection and to many loud concerts, especially Ted Nugent, unbelieveably LOUD!!!

Dennis....thanks for the quick response. Which type do you have (the Game ear I or II)?

freedivr2:

My hunting partner has lost almost ALL of his hearing in one ear and severely low in another. It became a problem in 1993 while bowhunting elk in Arizona, as he couldn't hear the bugles.

In 1999, we were drawn again, only this time he came armed with Walkers Game Ears. These things were UNREAL. They will definatley enhance your hearing ability. In fact you'll hear things you never thought you could. I tried one and was very impressed. However, although my partner was ready to compete with me chasing bugles, there was one problem:

You see your head has TWO ears, which allow you to get direction of sound. With one Game Ear in, I would take off towards a bugle and my hunting partner would head the other way, convinced the bull was where he was going. After turning him around several times and finding the bull, he made a trip into town and had another Game Ear next day aired. After that he was deadly, even hearing my whispers under my breath about his loud feet, and ability to leave foul odors as he walked. :)

They will definately work. However, for direction you may need two. If you're not sure, order from Cabelas, try them out, and if you don't like them, send them back for no charge other than shipping.

Hope it helps.

I have the walker game ear 2. I always thought about getting one but I would look at the price and think of something else I needed more but last christmas my dad, who is a gadget guy, got it for me and I have to say that I wish I would have gotten it along time ago.

Whoa! You guys are great.......Thanks for all the quick (and positive) responses on these devices so far. Bohntr.....good point, but I wonder if ya put one in the good ear and/or plug the bum ear with a finger if that might fix the directional problem that you made a point about? Can't hurt to pick up two of em and check that out, and take it from there (return one if that worked).

You guys really have no idea how much I appreciate your help here. It truly has been maddening the past year or two when I hear a quail calling, but have no idea how far or which side of the draw he and his covey are on, and sometimes guess right and sometimes see em flush on the other side of the draw or on my flank because I missed locating them with my lousy ears. I also have felt that I've been "cheatin" the critters to some degree when I use a rifle scope to enhance my shot placement, so adding another device to help my dwindling hearing was something I've been struggling with, but I think I'm gettin over that hump now. Thanks again, glad to hear these suckers work well for others! I'll give em a whirl.......P.S. getting old really is for the birds........

They are great, We had a guy that use them last year on a elk hunt and he would tell us he could hear the cows talking in front of us really clear and we (one's without a aid could only hear them a little now and then) we was able too stay with the herd most of the day just by him hearing them talking and us following along behind. I'm going to try and get me one this year,You had to keep turning your head to get the direction right,I think the 2 ear piece will be a great deal for bow hunters, The guy brother had one of the cheap models from K-mart I think cost around 17 bucks work fairly decent but wasn't in the league of the Game ear, but wasn't good on the days we had wind had to much noise from the sound of the wind, but on those clear still mornings it worked pretty good.

I have always wonodered about the wind with those game ears. Here in Wyoming where I live, the wind blows all the time in the fall and winter. I'm thinking that the wind howling in those would make so much noise that you could not hear anything else.

Do any of you have experience with hunting windy country??

Thanks

I too have some hearing loss, mostly from shoot'in and concerts since the '60s. I bought the game ear years ago, and it takes alittle time to adjust to!!!
When I first used it bowhunt'in , I had 2 squirrels chas'in through the oak leaves @ 75 yds. and I thought, for sure, it was a whole herd of deer. Also, if you hunt an area w/ alot of "songbird" migration activity, it'll drive you nuts hear'in all them birds at first light. You have to learn what volume works best for you. For hear'in distant bugles or gobbl'in, it's pretty hard to beat.
I think you'll find it pretty useful!!! :D

Great stuff for the aged and hard of hearing. Do I have to wear it in the house so I can hear my Wife?

In all seriousness I'm wondering what happens when you have a real loud noise close, like a gunshot. Does it 'clip' the volume when that happens or do you get an ear full?

Borrowed a pair of Proears from a friend last duck season and wow what a diference. I will be getting something this year but was triing to decide between 2 walkers or 1 proears muffs. It probably doesnt matter which way but the proears worked far past my expectations duck hunting. Also partner had a ported choke and I never flinced once from a shot they cut out the blast it was great.

Beanman.........Walker advertises to shut down the game ear to 29 decibels immediately when a loud blast goes off (otherwise you'd bust your eardrums). I think most hearing aids also have that feature cause you never know when a loud 100db noise might occur (your kid turning up his boom box, etc. lol.......).

I don't know how they are for all day, I know for the few hours a worn them they wasn't bad. IN the wind They was driving my buddy nuts just to much noise, on really wind days I don't think they will work for you.

Thanks Gator. We still gotta hook up sometime so you can show me some good stuff on whack-a-yote............

I guess this is where all the old guys have been hanging out eh? LOL! Makes me wonder if just cleaning out all that earwax and maybe shaving your ear hair might be a cheaper solution. LMAO!!!
In all seriousness, I've seen the commercials and I often thought it was just another gimic. Good to hear (pun intended) that it can be very usefull to the hearing impaired. I'll keep it in mind when I get as old as some of you guys. :)

BC, your puns are getting as corny as Deerking's attempts at humor.

Tell you what you young punk.........when you're my age, I'll get the last laugh because......uh-oh.........never mind, I'll be dead by then........dang.......

OK, tell you what I can do.........I'll leave you my game ears in my will................that'll be a good last laffer.....

I bought a woodland whisper because my elk hunting partners got tired of me not hearing them whisper. Works pretty good but I am going to buy another for the other ear. Last year a bull bugeled off in a big draw and because of just one ear hearing I got cofused of where he was. I think that the Walkers is probrably better than the woodland whisper but with all the other things I get for hunting my other half hits the roof when I want to drop the big $$

Hey, I am a younger guy and have been thinking of buying to improve on hearing what I cannot hear (not because of age or because of loss of hearing - though, I am sure I do have a little of that). Anyway, I was wondering....do the walker's game ear, when only using one, confuses you as to the direction of the sound that you had heard?

Thanks.

I imagine you can simulate using only one hearing aid and check how it effects detecting direction by putting a foam ear plug in only one ear.
Has anyone upgraded from an analog to a digital model and can say how much of an improvement there is?

Doug/RedRabbit

Smart arse comments, huh? We know how you lost your hearing, Myke.
It wasn't from all that disco inferno crap that you boogied to in your angelflytes and puka shell necklaces back in the 70's, was it?

uh.........well, maybe just a little of that, I'll admit. More like Led Zepplin, though, would be my guess....
