I've been considering puting in for archery deer here and i was wondering if anyone has draw this tag and if they have was it worth putting in. and how big of deer did you get.

Yes, it is one of the best units in the state,BUT will you ever draw for it? That is the question I would be asking ! Don and his boys have made this a rich man or a very lucky mans unit. They say there aren't that many deer down there to support anymore tags B&^%$## !!! there are bucks dropping like flies all over from old age . So good luck, and if you ever do draw this tag let me know, in the last 20 years I'll bet I've put more time down there than all of Don's boys combined and I won't charge you a dang penny .

Why do you start this #####. At one time this area sucked and now it has rebounded and yoou want to play the SFW card, some people are so petty.

It is an awesome hunt but I figure it will be at least 25 years to draw that tag... the DWR has projected to increase tags by the year 2010 to like over 70 tags.. we'll see!

2010......70 tags....not likely with all those high dollar SFW tags being sold every year!! SFW will screw it up like they did with the Book Cliffse selling out all the state hunters for tha fat ass with a fat wallet types........Look at how many Pangs. tags they are selling in '04 GO FIGURE....... why it has dropped so dramatically in quality but not the SFW selling tags hasn't changed...... Get the Henrys tag while the tag still is a great tag to draw.

Reflex-

How many bonus points do you currently have? I have been puting in for this hunt (archery) for the last few years. I read the draw statistics from last year, and the odds were 1 in 3 with 6 points. Maybe I am interpreting it wrong, but that is not too shabby let alone impossible.....

I dont have any yet but ive been thinking about putting in because i drew a buffalo tag this year and the odds where 1 in 200. and ive been out scouting and have seen some monsters already so i think thats the place to put in for.

Good for you on the Buff tag! Have you found that bull that you're looking for? Also, can you describe the terrain, and would it be a good archery unit? I have driven past it several times, but not actually on the mountain....

While scouting for your buff did ya think you could have put a stalk on any of those big bucks ya saw?? If you feel they are do-able with a bow then go for it for sure. You have to apply to draw and you almost have to just forget about odds because with bonus points anyone can draw no matter what the odds are. I apoligize to ya for bring up SFW crap in your post for info, I shouldn't have done it and I will avoid it. That would be so great of a hunt if you drew out on it!! Good luck on the Buff hunt...bow maybe a try??

Ya iam going to try with a bow at first then if i havent harvested a buffalo by the 10th day then iam going to switch to a rifle i think, but i definitly want to try with a bow first. I bet i could have stalked on a couple of those big bucks they where in the perfect position.

Antlerpinnacle,

I am in the position to draw a Premium archery tag. I have focused the last few years on the Henry's. You say you have spent many days on the Henry Mountains unit and it is one of the best in the state. It is easy to narrow down the other best, Paunsagahnt (sp?). Have you spent much time in this unit? And if so, which of the two Premium units would you choose to be the ultimate archery tag?

Everyone else.....please feel free to answer this question as well. I would love to get some opinions of guys who have spent time in both areas.

Thanks-

I was down there last weekend, and was wondering if theres much hunting on the southern two mtn ranges such as Hillers? Thanks Russ

Does anyone know what a monster buck actually looks like alive? Or are you just seeing 24 inchers thinking they're monsters? I've heard it time and time again from guys about how they seen a monster buck that was mid 30's and then they actually get it and it's only 24 inches. Sure alot of ground shrinkage going on. LOL!! I've spent some time on both units but I'm sure not the time that some of the locals have. Both units have the possibilities of producing good bucks but you really have to hunt hard to find them. I've talked to alot of hunters that have been really disappointed with both units. Had one guy that had spent his 9 points on the Henry Mountains start crying to me on the phone. Said he hiked everyday all day long and never saw a buck over 26 inches and never pulled the trigger. I spent my points on the Paunsaugunt last year and I'm here to tell you that it is one hard hunt if you're after a monster. I had 3 archery hunters talk to me about how crummy it was and whining because they spent their points. Both units don't have an over abundance of monster bucks, maybe and I mean maybe 10 total on each unit if I was guessing. If someone says there are monsters all over the place on either unit I would say I don't think so!

30incher i was down on the henrys 2 weekends ago scouting and looking at buffalo, and i came across a mature 32" buck it was a 6x8 without counting the eye guards. The way i knew this buck was a 32" buck is because from eartip to eartip on a mature buck is about 24" this buck on each side was about 3" past his ear plus he had a 2" cheater on his right antler. I agree not everyone knows what a 30" buck looks like but they are pretty distinctive when you see them. When i saw this buck he was not in a very rough area and was not very far off the road. The buck i saw will only get bigger, that big of a buck now makes for one heck of a buck come hunting season.

Seeing a buck that big makes your decision sound like a no brainer. If I saw a buck like that in any unit I would start accumalating points ASAP. Besides drawing a buff tag. That's pretty lucky, especially with 1 out of 200 odds. If I was you I would buy some powerball tickets, lottery tickets, and take a trip to Lost Wages, I mean Las Vegas. LOL! Good luck whatever your decision.

Ok we got the message on mature bucks, but are there many deer in the roadless areas on the southern ranges toward Powell? They looked burned pretty bad.

Are you talking about over by the horn? Witch mountain are you talking about? Over by the horn there is a pretty bad burn part. and i have seen plenty of deer over there.

Reflex

Deerlove, the deer numbers are much lower in the areas your asking about. The country as you know is very steep and pretty much covered with steep shale and thick pine. It does not get hunted much for obvious reasons but hey what better place for a shooter buck to live out his days. When I get my tag (fingers crossed) that will be the first place I look.
Hopefully the DWR will up the buff permits down there. They are destroying winter range.

I'm talking about mount Hillers and another peak wich is south of where most people hunt, I think there are basically three ranges in the unit, I;m talking about the southern two.

I have seen deer on all the ranges. I dont think there is as much hunting pressure on hillers as the other ranges. I have seen a couple of shooter bucks over there, but i would say most of the deer are on Mt. Ellen.

Reflex

Deerlove, yes I know which you are talking about. Those are the peaks is was refering to in my previous post.

South of Ellen is Pennel then south east of that is Hillers, across the Bullfrog highway are the Little Rockys.

It was cool that they let the Henrys burn last year, made for thick regeneration/horn growing buffett.
I'm guessing the heavy rains afterward made for conditions that will never be matched...... Sorry NUNYA.
Sorry to you too bobcat, since your not "the only one wondering" why they won't let more of those suckers burn.
