Well I drew a 2b January hunt and now I have questions. I won't head up to scout until the weather cools a little, but have been looking at the maps and am wondering any suggestions on area to begin scouting? The forrest or the lower areas? Thanks for the help and good shoot'n!

talk to shedcrazy or nmhuntnut they might know some area..both are from NM

myself know some area but not very good...have helped friend killed an 10 point buck with bow in 2001 and there are few good place to start

I hunted the late rifle hunt a couple of years ago. Unless there are some good October storms, I wouldn't start scouting until at least early November..They will probably start moving in mid to late Oct. and there should be lots of deer in there by early to mid Nov. Fun hunt..You're going to have a good time!

Nice draw. good unit to hunt in at the right time. You ask about the forest or lowere areas. well either area can produce nice bucks. like has already been said, wait till late fall to begin scouting. The forest may prove to be the best bet if there are plenty of storms otherwise take a long look at the south side.

By mid-November many nice bucks will have migrated down from CO. The roads getting into the northern part of the unit will be tough; bring chains. There will be several locked gates into the oil production areas; no vehicles allowed, even if a worker leaves a gate open by mistake. Get a map, find some isolated areas, park your vehicle at the gates, and hike or horseback in a few miles. You should have no problem shooting a good buck.
