Has anybody out there hunted unit 55? Got a tag for the last season. I assume the weather will dictate the odds for seeing big bucks. Any tips?

Congrats! How many points did you have? It looks like another two years before I draw for 55. I live in Gunnison and know the area pretty well. You shouldn't have any trouble filling your tag. That unit has some big bucks. Late season will be close to the rut, early snow will help. Send me an email if you want more info.

I have a second season deer tag for 55. Just got back from a scouting trip. Did see some nice bucks. Saw them up high at spring creek. Would appreciate very much any info you can give me about the area. Also looked in cement creek, alder creek area. The bucks were up high I would imagine some would be moved down by oct.Thinking about camping around Fossil Ridge and hunting there for the first few days. I would be very thankfull for any info you could give. Send me a e mail.

Thanks again

I'd be interested in how many points you had before you drew. The funny thing is that before the state went to a draw you'd be lucky to see a doe or small buck in 55, now there's trophy bucks galore, well maybe not galore but plenty of them. Call Taylor Park Post and ask for the Owner he might lead you to Mr. Big. I've talked to him and people in that area are worried about loosing a large majority of the quality bucks in a bad winter.

My March 2004 Edition of "Huntin' Fool" (Monthly guide to Western Big Game Hunting) says you needed a minimum of 3 points in 2002 and 4 in 2003. Kill sucess was 97% in 2001 and 100%!!! in 2002. This unit was a top 10 (#9) recommended unit to apply for. The excerpt FWIW is "Public land hunt with a lot of bucks, great hunt for 4 pref. points, 26" bucks available."
