I was hunting the Bitter Creek South this weekend, and had absolutely no luck finding any big bulls. We found a couple herds of elk, but all just had some small rag-horns and spikes in it. So we decided to come home early and go back up from Sept. 8th-14th, hopefully by then the big bulls come out. Anybody else hunting the books for elk or deer and seen any big bulls. Any suggestions would be great.

I was down there last weekend nere the thompson springs area and saw plenty of nice bulls and bucks one bull would score great for the book cliff. they were all over

I don't know the south end very well but you need to get up high. thats where I bet most of the elk are. I havent been up there this year but from past expirence thats were I would be.

Hey whites88,

I am the father of lkeele07 and he is out of town this weekend but I wanted to know if you could PM me and talk to me about where exactly you were last weekend up thompson springs.
Thanks

I was up sego canyon right near thoompson canyon it is the roadless area so you will need horses or mules that as much as I can tell ya there are three elk hunters and a deer hunter in our group Do you have a tag?

whites88 thanks for the input, a lot of people on this forum are not very willing to share information even if it is a Limited entry unit. I do understand not sharing info on over the counter tags though. I do have a tag, but it is for the Bitter Creek South area, and not the roadless.

lkeele07,

I do not know how big of bull you are looking for, but I have the same tag this year and was over there this past weekend hunting. We called in several 330 class bulls and had a 360 class bull coming in (until a guy on an ATV come tulling down a nearby road). I will be over there hunting this weekend and the following week as well. As Jake H stated, you need to get up high. Get out on the ridges (away from the road) and look and listen. The bulls were very vocal last weekend and responded well to calls.

Good luck next week.

I'm not sure where the hunting boundaries are for th elk units, but a few years ago during a scouting trip in mid September we saw huge amounts of elk and some good bulls around Tom Patterson Springs / canyon. I can't remember the name of the canyons but if you followed Seep Ridge road north to south (through Ouray) to the top where the radio tower is, there were good numbers of elk there as well.

Like I said, I'm not familiar with the hunting boundaries. I hope this helps.

A guy brought one in from down there yesterday that was 351 gross 6 X 7. Great bull he has a 22" G3 on one side. Don't know what part of the unit he was in but all he could say was that sh!t was THICK!

I hunted the same area 3 years ago, saw the most elk in the eastern side of the unit near Colorado. The elk were concentrated at the highest elevations.
