California X3A

We3,

When you applied for the limited entry tag, did you have any idea what area you were interested in hunting? Or, did you just throw a dart and hope you'd get picked and then figure out the rest later? Are you going to scout, or should this be considered your scouting? Understanding that July is almost over, and sooner rather than later the archery and rifle hunts will start in the x zones. Let us remember that the x-zone tags are the most sought after tags in the state. You might be cutting it a bit close. As a general rule, people tend to clam up on the brink of the season.

All that being said, there are some excellent resources offered by the DFG and even more nuggets on-line. Get a hold of the warden and biologist for your unit, they have good info, but often won't give up the best details on first contact. Make a few calls, better yet, take the info they give you, go scout that info, then call them back and let them know if you found what your looking for. Often times the second or third call will really produce good leads (as long as you prove your not just looking for directions to the tree that the deer are tied to).

Its not to late to scout either. Make a weekend out of it with family and friends. Most likely you'll come across others that are doing the same and they can be excellent points of contact to compare notes with.

Good luck.

I haven't hunted there in a long time. I did very well east off the top of happy camp look-out. Do the early glassing thing and then run the brush with your pals.

Thanks for the help. My father and I have been putting in for X3A for several years per the conversations with some guys who used to hunt the area and friends in Oregon above Goose lake. We have also seen the area on they way through to visit the friends in Oregon. We are planning a trip in the next couple of weeks for scouting. My father is going to follow that with his own trip to see what he comes across for good areas. Between my full time job and full time college, it has been too much to get there since we have been drawn.

We just wanted some more opionions on where to start. I will start immediately with the calls as suggested. Thank you so much, and God Bless.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-22-04 AT 04:25PM (MST)[p]I think the guy to talk to would be Randy Shin out of the Redding office. I know a few guys that have done well up by Happy camp but there is a lot of pressure. There is alot of land up there and you might have a good chance to get away from the crowd and find a goodie.

Good luck.
