Hi all, I'm new here.
I drew the subject unit and hunt. I don't expect any honey-hole suggestions, but can someone give me the once over on the unit? Like what is the north part (by CO border) like, how about area next to Jicarilla, when does the rut typically start in this unit, where is the best areas for walk in hunting to get away from roads/quads/etc?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

By November, many nice bucks will have migrated down from CO. The roads getting into the northern part of the unit will be tough; bring chains. There will be several locked gates into the oil production areas; no vehicles allowed, even if a worker leaves a gate open by mistake. Get a map, find some isolated areas, park your vehicle at the gates, and hike or horseback in a few miles. You should have no problem shooting a good buck. Try N of hwy 64 in the mid. to upper portion of the Carson forest.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-25-04 AT 11:09AM (MST)[p]We drew the late 2B hunt last year, and here are my impressions. The weather was down right warm,in the 50's. We talked to the forest ranger and he said that we were a good 2-3 weeks away from the rut even though we were hunting the late hunt. We hunted in the Carson, and there were lots, and lots of hunters, which was quite dissappointing considering that this is a quality, low draw hunt." The weather was dry up until half way thru the hunt so chains were not nesseccary. Most of the gas roads will be locked , so be prepared to either walk or horseback in. One great alternative would be to bring a mountain bike if you do not have horses. We definitely will include bikes this year. The carson is soo vast that given the closed roads, if you do not have horses or bikes you will really be limiting yourself by just hiking. I'm quite sure that 97 % of all the hunters will not hike more than 2-3 miles away from the open roads. Forget about ATV's because they are motorized so you can only drive them as far as you can drive a truck.Even when we hiked in we encoutered hunters every time. We saw lots of does and very few bucks. Biggest buck we saw was an 8 pointer and we passed him up for we going for "boone or bust." We also hunted the border of the Jicarilla but I think given the warm weather and the premature rut conditions, we never saw anything shootable. We have drawn 2b again this year and will be modifying our plans based on what we learned last year. Keep in mind that 2B is a large unit, so do not restrict yourself to hunting just the Carson. Also, Gas stations are far and few in between so be sure to bring plenty of it , especially if you decide to modify your hunt and drive somewhere else. Email me of you have any more questions.

I'll "2ND" the Mountain Bikes, while hunting the Carson N.F.Hunted their in 02,on a Muz Bull Elk hunt, good way to get back behind the GATES.Saw some deer South of Rd 314 and East of 315,but NO SIZE.If serious,Id go with a "GUIDE",the "LARGO" has some real "TOADS",but lots of country,also---Good Luck

Great advice guys, thanks. A mountain bike will be an easy add to the gear with my vehicle. Sounds like weather is everything, from deer location to the road conditions.

More, anyone?

LAST EDITED ON Jul-25-04 AT 11:19PM (MST)[p]I hunted that late hunt in 2002 along with Ridgedrifter...We had a pretty good, one day snow storm right before the hunt and it seemed to trigger the rut.. My buddy took a 27 inch 4by4 opening morning, about 2 miles from a main road.. His neck was swollen and he was running from some other hunters otherwise I'm sure he would have had some does with him... we saw a bigger buck the third day following 5 or 6 does around, but he was too far out and we never found him again..Then we shot another 27 inch 4by4 the second to last day that was running with one doe. He was about 4 miles from a main road...the last day we saw a 180 plus 4 point with a bunch of does..We were in about 3 miles at first light and it was COLD!! We watched him from a thousand yards away, raking his antlers in the brush and went after him to try and fill our third and final tag.. Got within 200 yards of him in the pinions, but no shot.. He was a good buck...
Hunt hard, hike in the dark, and hope for a couple of snow flurries and some cold weather and you probably see a good buck.. Seemed like some of the 25 inch plus bucks were rutting harder than some of the 18- low 20 inch bucks..
Hike in on gas roads in the dark for 30 to 90 minutes and get off of them at first light. Most of the good bucks we saw were fairly close to the gas roads, but not within view of them.
Fun hunt! Good luck!!
