I used to spend a lot of time on the Vernon unit, but have not spent much time out there in the last 10 years or so. My friend has a tag. He has a heart ailment and doesn't get around too good so I am trying to help him all I can. I have been showing him areas that I used to haunt; Little Valley, the back side of Little Valley, the Riverbed, and Keg Mountain.

Does anyone have any other ideas or comments concerning the unit? He wants to make good use of his tag and it is an awful big area. If you have any ideas please send me a private message.

Thanks.

My buddy drew an archery permit on this unit last year. We had a lot of success and found a lot of bucks, a lot of nice bucks. We heard from several people that the deer move out of there just after the muzzleloader hunt and head west towards their winter range. I do not know how much truth there is to this.

Your friend should have a chance at something nice. It is a area that you will see alot of deer/bucks...you'll see alot of mature deer that have the heavy look but will be 3x4's or perhaps the big 3x3's. Some guys like that look. The great thing about the unit is that there is some GREAT deer on it too.The country is big and it easy to think that water is a huge factor out there, but it isn't. There is water everyplace and alot of hidden springs that you'll find in the darndest places. Someone mentioned the move they make and mis led you a little bit on it. They do move but it is a tad sooner than the muzzle loader hunt. Usually by about a week to ten days they will start. So if you loose a buck about that time look hard because he'll be there, just a mile or so West. They make the big move later on. One thing to keep in mind is that you'll see a new group of bucks come into your area (probably) when they make that first move. You'll know it is coming when the does start to bunch up.
If you would like to post your E-Mail address I'll give you some more helpful info.
