I have been hunting elk in area 7. I was there 4 days for the opener and Friday through Sunday over the weekend. According to my GPS I have walked about 50 miles in that time and I am yet to see an elk or hear a bugle. I have also seen limited fresh sign. I have hunted two different areas(I'll tell you in PM) but am thinking about moving to a totally new area. Can someone PM me with any help or advice??? I have been hunting away from roads and have seen a few other hunters. Any help, advice or general directions would really help. Please PM me if you would like.

Thanks A TON!!!!

Why not do some additional research. Call a different biologist and game warden than you originally called and ask for some advice on places to hunt. The biologist and wardens for my area were happy to share some pointers. I saw 17 bulls last weekend and bugled in several including a good 5x6 at 17'. Unfortunately he wasn't the 300 class bull I'm holding out for. Good luck...

Did you draw any of the HMA Access area's? What area were you in? I was there too but didn't get much going. Did call in a small rag horn, but not what I'm after.

Thanks Triple BB. I have spoke with the game warden and biologist and even spoke with two retired game wardens in the area. I know I am is areas that held elk in the past but for some reason or another, they aren't there now. I think the reason is there are so many cattle in these areas. I for one, think there are to many cattle being grazed on national forest and then the ranchers won't even let you hunt or cross there land. It is very discouraging. It is very frustrating when it seems every hillside and drainage is covered with cattle then when you walk through, you cause a stampede. That can't be good for hunting!!!! Does anyone have any comments or past experiences on hos elk react to cattle is their territory?

Spoke to a friend today who hunted 7 last weekend. They missed two 6x6's and called in several others. He's on public ground and said they saw quite a few elk. If I told you where, he probably wouldn't let me use his 4 wheeler next month during the rifle season...
