Butterfield Canyon

Hey does anyone that lives in Utah know anything about this canyon? is it any good? and what about a place called yellow fork trail, its just down the road from this place?

You are asking for trouble hunting this area. North side of the canyon is owned by Kennecott, they patrol it heavily, especially during the hunts. Lot's of ignorant cop "wantabes", who love to harass anyone looking for a place to hunt.
South side of the canyon is mostly private, untill you get about 3/4 of the way up the canyon. THe public parts get hunted, very, very hard.
Yellow Pine area.......surrounded by a lot of homes, and a lot of antihunters. They will post "closed to deer hunting signs" all around the area, right before the hunts. Not a great place to go, unless you are willing to have some comfrontations with antihunters.
Best solution to hunt this area, is to access it from the Tooele side (aka Middle Canyon, Stockton Canyon, etc.), you are still going to have a lot of company, but a least you will have access to public land, where you don't get hasseled.

There a some good bucks in this area however, as mentioned above, it is near impossible to access where they hide out as its all private. I guess you might get lucky and catch one on the public side. >>>------>Sixgunn<------<<<

Another thing to make sure you DON'T do is wander on to the Camp Williams property, they are pretty serious about escorting you off (at gunpoint) if you end up overthere.

Oh ya I grew up 9 minutes from there and I would hunt there if I were him. He%% no don't hunt up there. Why would you want to do something stupid like that. But it does make for a good place to make out.

If there is so much problem with private property and stuff, why the crap was it like a highway up there, people all over the place, parking right by the posted signs and riding 4 wheelers and hiking and having picnics everywhere,

and this place gets hunted with rifle i take it?

Great place to go and watch deer, bad place to hunt. Too many people for the tiny amount of public lands.

I live about 5 minutes from there, and I spent a lot of the winter watching the bucks from that Canyon winter on the Kennecott property. Some real awesome animals, but I for one wouldnt ever hunt Butterfield. Too many problems to deal with to my liking.

My father in law owns a good chunk land on the south side of Butterfield. What most people don't realize is that most if not all the property to the south is private property. You have to get into west canyon before you get to any public stuff. I have hunted up there for 15 years and probably know the area better than anyone up there. I usually don't have problem if I see a few guys in that area, but come hunting season it's a freakin zoo up there. This year the bigger land owners are starting to crack down. I know they have contacted the DWR to help them get the area under controll. I am not a land NAZI by any means, but if you have ever been up there durring a hunt, you would understand what the problem is.

Oh ya better stear well clear of Yellow Fork & Camp Williams.

I saw yellow fork also, what is wrong with yellow fork? cant hunt there either? It says no motor vehicles but what about hunting?

Closed to all hunting that cayon is. Patrol it they do and a ticket you will get. (Thats why we say stay away)

I didnt see a no hunting sign anywhere up yellow fork trail, not even any no tresspass signs, only no motor vehicles, horse, bike and hike only,

and then there is also the thought that comes to mind that some certain people just dont want anymore peeps up there chasing the big bucks around, so they lie and say that there is no hunting up there, (so stay away)

Next time your there look closer at the sign by the gate or better yet call the DWR for yourself. Just givin ya the facts man.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-10-04 AT 09:50AM (MST)[p]Justice are you for real. Ya we are all trying to keep a big secret and that is that all the big bucks in UT are in YELLOW FORK. HA I can't stop laughing. Hunt up there if you are so confident.

Hey Joe, you sure have a big mouth for someone that is 5'3" and 120 pounds,

how about you show me some pics of your big deer then if your the all mighty hunter, I am just trying to find a place to hunt around here, and you laugh at me? hmmm

Hey dude, Joemama is at least 5'4" 130lbs, and he's shot plenty of good bucks, he just never finds them. If you are seriously looking for a spot rather than trying to argue with everyone, Joe would be the first to help you out.

by the way, "your" means belonging to you, and "you're" means you are.

Justice,

I live out here in Herriman and know some of the land owners up Butterfield and in years past they have not patrolled the area very heavily, but with all of the vandalism that has gone on up there this year they are very serious about stopping the trespassing. As for yellow fork I believe at the bottom of the trail there are no ?No Trespassing" signs but start up the trail and it will lead you to private property and I believe it is posted very well. I would definitely do my home work and if you are unsure as to where you can and cannot hunt I would choose to not hunt it as to being prosecuted for trespassing.

Dave,

Look I'm not trying to argue with you, there's been enough of that going on here. I wasn't laughing at you I was laughing with you. I can just imagine you going up to Yellow Fork thinking, "I'll show them at MM, I'm going to shoot a big buck." And then whamo the police show up to take your gun away and everything else and then you posting some stupid post that says you shot a huge buck up Butterfield. It's a shame that you insult me by saying I'm 5'3 because I'm 5'4 275 lbs. Haahaahaa. No really its a shame that you do insult me because I know that area like the back of my hand. There are places within a half an hour to an hour of Butterfield that on any given day I can show you at least a 26" buck. My buddy shot a 28" buck last year with his muzzleloader thanks to moi, and yes Dave moi is spelled MOI not your (you're). Lets not insult a short man just because his spelling and grammar and hunting skill are better than YOURS, now its appropiate to use y-o-u-r. Dave so much to learn and so little time to bad I have excellent spots in all of the state to hunt and you're, notice y-o-u-'-r-e, looking in the dumpster of Butterfield canyon. Good luck to you and may god bless your hopeless soul.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-11-04 AT 11:16AM (MST)[p]Oh and P.S. I'm 5'10" and three quarters inch and weight is 170 lbs. Hmmmh Hmmmh ( as my guts moves in and out real fast from trying not to laugh.)

That's why Joe can't recover his big bucks, he shoots them from his car but when he tries to hike to the downed buck (100 yds) he gets out of breath and has to roll back to his truck and down some ho-hos and a mtn dew. Sorry chubs, the truth must come out.

Hmm, I had a really nice post for ya joe, I guess that the founder didnt like what I had to say to ya, he must be 5'3 too. maybe thats why he took it off.

but anyways, you can talk all you want about how good of a hunter you are, but "no guts no story" as they say, im not interested in what you can see through a 60 power spotting scope. I can stand at the capital and show you a deer on south mountain, thats not impressive.

and as for you ripping on me about one misspelled word, you obviously should get out and hunt more instead of finding every last word that I screw up on. then you might have a pic to show me.

Justpissed,

Are you like 6'8" or something, or just obsessed with men's height? Brian is a good guy for running this website and there's no need to "dis" him. Time to put up big man, let's see your big buck pics. By the way, you didn't misspell the word, you used the wrong one, and I think we all need to get out and hunt more. Or we could sit here all day and have keyboard fights like a bunch of idiots. Again, if you are looking for areas in the central unit, just ask...and listen, no need to get brash.

hey you two were brash first =) i just asked if muzzle was pullin my leg trying to get me not to go up there, kinda like when you talk to your so called friends at the bow shop and they say " ya i have been up there, there is nothing up there, but over there in whatever canyon there is a crap load of bucks, smallest one a 30 incher"
when the truth is there is not a dang thing in whatever canyon but the place talked about the first time is where there really is stuff. but they do not want you to go there so they say there is nothing there and tell you to go where there is nothing,

am i right or am i right?

(i say im right)

Justice, I was just up there yesterday, there are giant bucks running all over the place. You should plan on spending the entire season there. Don't forget to post a picture of the big buck you get. Good luck.

see what i mean, I think that most of the people who post here ARE full of crap

=) thanks jim

LAST EDITED ON Aug-13-04 AT 08:49PM (MST)[p]I wouldn't say most of the people in here are full of crap, just alot of immature jerks. If you go to the top of Butterfield then go north to the lookout you can hike down to the west in Archer canyon,I seen a couple decent 4x4s in there last Sunday. They were probably 23-24".
